Sounds like their strength and conditioning coach was a real monster, and Durkin knowingly allowed him to operate this way, i.e. "enabled" it. Sounds like even assistant coaches felt he was a problem, but were afraid to confront Durkin over him.
I still don't see how or why they'd retain Durkin... even if you cynically want to say it's all about wins and losses, Durkin is no better than Canada so far. maybe even worse.
