Lynch???

Some really interesting points brought up the other day on the radio. This whole concept of "defense wins championships" is basically one of those old football adages. A good defense is helpful, but having a superior offense with the way the rules are catered is how it works today. Other than Seattle a couple years ago, the teams winning SBs have had okay defenses, but nothing special.

And the fact that the Lions have built, and built, and built around this guy and nothing's happened speaks on his inability to elevate others.

A great defense will probably get you to the playoffs, but at some point the offense has to do their part in the playoffs. Having to rely on a defense to carry the team in the playoffs against the best teams in the league usually doesn't work out.

Even with Seattle's past defense they still had a QB who was pretty good. They wouldn't have won with just any ole' QB.

I think we can all agree that there are many ways to win in the NFL. You can win with a great QB and average defense. You can win with a great defense, running game and average QB. And of course...you can win with good offense, good defense and good QB. I think we can also agree that the Lions have none of these attributes!

Look at the previous 49 SB's and the "good" QB's are plentiful. Meaning almost always. So regardless the defense, you pretty much need at least a good QB.

Disregard the extra stuff throw in there but you need a good QB. Makes it so much easier.

yes...you almost need at least a good QB. In the past 15 years there have been 5 SBs that were won with average to slightly above average QBs (Eli 2x, Dilfer, Johnson, Flacco)

Point being, the rookies won't be great and will need time to develop. Stafford is on par with the average to slightly good QB group. Either way, the team will only win with a strong D and solid running game.

Tom Brady will not be playing QB for the Lions next year, and anyone who is at QB will not be on par with Tom Brady. Have to face reality, only way to win is get the D and running game to be great performers. Don't have to run 30 times, but need to average close to 5.0 ypc.

I differ a bit in your opinion but the point is Matt can't win unless everything goes right. ELI and his 2 SB, in those playoffs he was better than slightly above average. Same with Flacco.

Now you can get to the playoffs with an average QB but he needs to play well once the team gets there. Even Dilfer elevated his game once the playoffs arrived. Do we think Matt could elevate his game to that level, 4 games?

I could mention Marino but that was quite a while ago and too easy. But recently, Wilson and Mariota. They aren't the only ones.. In today's game you can be good as a rookie QB.

Honest, non-trolling question... Do you guys really think any of the QBs coming out are "the answer"? I just don't see it when I look at the guys expected to enter the draft. It reminds me of when we drafted Stafford. Lots of mediocre QB talent, but nothing great jumping out at us.

Nope. but it's probably better than paying a top 28 qb 100 mil.

Not disagreeing there, but that's a different issue. I think I'd rather see us sign a "short-term solution" FA QB than wasting what will likely be a top five, if not #1 overall pick on a mediocre QB. Instead, we should spend that pick on the closest thing to a sure bet we can.

Agreed. And I'll add if we can't move stafford. ...hes a better option than the trash on the short term vet list. You move him for picks and start over. Or you roll with him until his contact expires. Team had to many holes to waste a pick on grooming a qb to sit the bench.

Sometimes you need to take a chance. That doesn't mean first round QB but maybe we get a Russell Wilson type or we get lucky and get a good QB. If they don't work out no worries they're cheap so we can take another QB later..

Because there is no guarantee that a FA QB "as a short term solution" is any better down the road. Especially considering the shit there is at FA backup QB's in this league.

I linked the FA QBs in another thread and asked who on that list, who will realistically be available, would anybody want. It was pretty quiet, so I'm not so sure the Lions can actually get a FA QB who is better.

In the end, 'Hughes is correct. If you don't think Matt is capable of helping this team get to a SB, a similar QB but cheaper would be a better option.

I must have missed where Wilson and Mariota are leading their teams to the playoffs this year. Or even next year by the looks of it. And I would have loved seeing the Lions draft Mariota. Wilson...i just don't like that guy, if Lions got him I literally would have never watched them even if they went to the SB.

It is one thing to say that and another to name who that QB should be. I'm just not seeing the names. However, if Lions traded for Colin, I'm definitely good with that, I just am asking for the names of viable options. If that option saves $10+M then I can see that money spent elsewhere to improve the team, I'm good with that too...even a rookie...provided they build up the D and run game to overcome the mistakes that QB will make.

So not saying Stafford has to be the QB, just trying to find a name I can comfortably support.
