Martin Mayhew looking forward to Ryan Broyles' offseason

I'm all for putting pressure on him. Competition is good and he's never had it. I keep hearing that someone in the Lions organization is enamored with Bryce Petty.

Competition is good for everyone. Elway was an slightly above average QB until Denver drafted Tommy Maddux in the first round in 1992. Coincidence? Probably. But I bet it didn't hurt!

Keep thinking Arizona, Palmer goes down and their season went poof. End zone Dan and Moore just don't cut it..

Interesting point, Stafford has yet to face any competition since being drafted. Shaun Hill always seemed like more of an insurance plan, not really a threat to start, and let's be honest...there's no competition with a 1st overall pick, especially back in 2009 with insane rookie contracts. Then Dan-O came back, who was a joke.

Perhaps it's time.

What's the difference? The 2nd round picks don't play anyways, so why not draft someone who can at least give Stafford some pressure?

Lions worked out Tahj Boyd yesterday. Idk if that's legitimate competition, but it's no worse than Orlovsky

They mention Mannion from Oregon State in the article too. I really like his arm strength and mobility

STOP posting facts. You need to look at LKP's true stats. I think there is a web site that has them...it's run by Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

WTF? Tom, Santa and the Easter Bunny??? Those two are far more visible and productive than Stafford...why do have to insult them like that?

I do think we need an upgrade at back up qb. I don't know that he'll ever "push" Stafford but still we need an upgrade over craplosky. Mannion scares me....guy that holds the ball too long, takes too many sacks and throws a lot of INTs. If both him and Petty are day 3 guys...the pick should be petty 100/100 times imo.

Tajh has much less potential than either of the other 2 and would be your back up qb lifer pretty much. Wouldn't touch him before the 5th round.

Has any quarterback been any good in the nfl coming from the offense Petty is in? I knew RG3 would be terrible, and I don't think Petty will be anything but a backup.

You watched the msu game, right? That had very little to do with scheme....he threw the shit out of the ball and smoked msus dbacks with perfectly placed passes. An accurate qb like that can play in any system imo...

He smoked Drummond who gets smoked by every spread team. MSU has struggled against good spread teams like Baylor and Oregon. Spread teams put a fast guy in the slot and isolate the safety against MSU. How well did Petty play once Narduzzi started pressuring him?

So the scheme that petty has is a fast guy in the slot....really? That's why he had so much success? Really?

Every good spread team isolated MSU's safeties and made them pay. You still never named anyone from that system that was worth a shit in the NFL.

Drew Brees came from a spread offense. Not a spread option, but Purdue went 5 wide almost every play.

1600+ attempts in 3 years as a starter.

He asks a bullshit question....theres like 4 elilte qbs in the NFL. 4. and baylors football program has only been worth a shit for like 6 years. Look I like MSU football but I could just as easily say what qb has ever come out of their system that is worth a shit. Hoyer failed. lolstanton. RG3 plays over Cousins and RG3 played in baylors system. Cam, Kap and even RG3s first year when he was healthy all had success in the spread option. Wilson does it from time to time. Spread guys usually fail because they aren't good pocket passers in the first place....and you need to be a good pocket pass? in the NFL first and foremost. Petty showed he can throw a football, accurately, from the pocket. And heck....if hes not any good just go get a fast guy to play in the slot lol.

His 3 TDs vs MSU were bombs or a trick play to a fat OT, the 2 bombs were on an isolated safety.. Art Briles has put Kevin Kolb and Case Keenum along with RG3 in the NFL, all terrible. Not hard to br accurate when you just let a wr run under a deep ball.

Why keep jumping on RG3? He was really good prior to injury. He won Offensive ROY (over Luck), he led the Redskins to a 10-6 record and the playoffs. Sure, he's been a shell of that player since his mounting injuries, but you can't take away that he was a really good QB when healthy.

Also, what do Kevin Kolb and Case Keenum have to do with it? Kolb was a solid backup QB drafted in the second round. The magnitude of his below-average play had nothing to do with system, it had to do with teams constantly overvaluing him. Case Keenum was, no one ever expected him to be any good. If you're just looking at system, there's no conclusive idea to have. If you are looking at draft position, everyone from that system pretty much played to their expectations.
