explains the 3 pot busts from the 2011 class....

GM Martin Mayhew insists marijuana usage alone will not scare the Lions off a prospect in next week's draft.

North Alabama CB Janoris Jenkins, Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Ohio State OT Mike Adams all have a history of marijuana usage and have been popularly mocked to Detroit in the first round. "The league has really changed over the years," Mayhew said. "If you go back 10, 15 years ago, and a guy had a positive test, that was a big deal ... It still is, but not at the level it was years ago."

Also...probably keeping the smoke screen (no pun intended) up for possible trade scenarios. A good GM makes it seem like everyone is in play.

15 years ago were guys suspended because of weed use?

In my LT voice: "That brings me to my next point kids, don't smoke crack".
He used to smoke crack before games, I know, I know its not weed but still I don't remember hearing about him getting suspended.
Guess I didn't answer the Q, 87 is when steroid testing started I would imagine that included drugs.

NFL didnt start drug testing until 1987..like stated above.

I just think its funny how many people had posted the Lions organization doesnt draft guys who have character concerns. Who hasnt smoked pot anyway??? And honestly, who gives a shit?

The NFL and their Drug policy.

Yeah I'm sure character issues played no part in us passing on Jimmy Smith last year.

Why do people think everyone has smoked pot? I never did, I'm sure some football players haven't.

Its just extremely common, I honestly do not know many people who havent at least experimented with it. All Im saying is people who havent, have got to be the minority. I remember hearing that Leshoure got in trouble twice on marijuana related charges in a short span, and agree that is a problem.

We didnt pass on Jimmy Smith we simply took a much more highly rated prospect. If Smith was considered the BPA at that point we probably would have taken him. The character issues didnt affect our decision either way.

Good point. Last year it looks like we actually do take the guys with red flags.

Fairley dropped to 13 because he:

Went the JuCo route because he forgot to go to class.
Missed his flight to the combine.
Missed multiple team meetings and interviews pre-draft.
To be fair he meant to do all those things...but then (you know the rest)

Leshoure dropped because:

He was suspended 1 game at Illinois. Which was later found to be due to a positive drug test.

Ja Jenkins #1 I already have my Nike 3rd alternate with the giant lion's head on the torso ordered.

They have just chosen to grab skill over character and they hope it works out. So far it has been 50-50 so i hope these dudes can grow up and get their nonsense together.

The issue is never pot itself...it's what it represents. A guy knows he is about to enter the NFL. The guy knows the higher you are picked the larger your contract will be. He also knows it is against the NFL policy and you can be suspended for drug use. And yet this person is very willing to risk all of this just to smoke weed.

That's the issue. It shows you make bad choices and that you don't care about consequences. It shows you are willing to put the team at risk for winning a championship all so you can smoke some weed. If I'm the person who is about to have to sign a first round pick to a 4 or 5 year deal for tens of millions of dollars, I want to know that guy is committed to the team and willing to make some personal sacrifices. If you can't do something as simple as give up weed, then good luck somewhere else.

For a drug that's supposedly not addictive, there sure are a lot of guys willing to risk millions of dollars just to be able to smoke it.

50-50 is giving ALOT of credit....fairley showed signs....but they were few and far between. Leshoure was on the shelf all year and Cullbreath sucks. Id go 20-80.

you were only looking at one draft. This crew has been here three years. So when you factor in Stafford, pettigrew, delmas, levy, Suh, and best along with other guys Id say 50-50 is pretty close.

Just to clarify Im not saying all of these guys had character issues just that they were rated by our staff as BPA.

I was looking at the ppl he has drafted with character concerns. For me theyve created more buzz in bad press than on the field.

i know thats not exactly fair to say in Leshoures case since he was injured all year. Who knows when Leshoure gets back on the field but when hes able to im sure Goodell drops the hammer for atleast a few more games.
