Lions GM Martin Mayhew said Thursday that he does not plan to use the franchise tag this offseason.
"But you never know what might happen," he allowed. Free agent LE Cliff Avril would seem to be the most prime candidate in Detroit, but the financials wouldn't make much sense. Other key impending Lions free agents include MLB Stephen Tulloch, CB Eric Wright, LT Jeff Backus, and backup RB Kevin Smith.
Lions GM Martin Mayhew anticipates that Calvin Johnson's cap number will be roughly $20 million in 2012.
Johnson's base salary is scheduled to be $14 million, and he may have hit escalator clauses that would send it even higher. Mayhew said the Lions will try to sign Megatron to a new contract, which would lessen his cap cost and also get him locked up long term. Johnson is entering a contract year.
