Metal detectors coming to all MLB stadiums in 2014

Although I understand that we live in an increasingly violent society, I don't know how MLB can equate the Boston Marathom bombings to ballparks, since the marathon is held through publicly accessible streets, and would be very difficult to screen everyone lining them along the route. There is no admission fee to watch @ the finish line, AFAIK.
