Record: U-M (12-8-3, 6-6-3-1 CCHA), LSSU (12-9-2, 7-7-1-1 CCHA)
Attendance: 6,637
Next U-M Event: Saturday, Jan. 7 -- vs. Lake Superior State (Yost Ice Arena), 7:35 p.m.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 16 USCHO/No. 13 USA Today/USA Hockey) rung in the New Year with a 4-2 victory over Lake Superior State University (No. 18 USCHO/NR USA Today/USA Hockey) on Friday night (Jan. 6) at Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines' third straight win gives them 22 points in the CCHA standings and catapulted the team from eighth place into a tie for fifth.
Forwards David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) (1g, 2a) and Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) (2g) accounted for five of the Michigan's 12 total points, and the line of Alex Guptill (New Market, Ontario), Wohlberg and Brown was responsible for three of Michigan's four goals in the contest. Defenseman Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) earned two assists and a team-leading plus-3 rating in his first game of the season
Travis Lynch (White Lake, Mich.) scored his sixth goal of the campaign at 9:50 of the first, burying the puck five-hole on a breakaway following a lead pass from Mac Bennett (Narragansett, R.I.).
Wohlberg opened up a 2-0 lead for the Wolverines less than five minutes later, capitalizing on a pass from Guptill at the top of the goal crease. Merrill picked up his first helper of the evening on Wohlberg's ninth goal of the season.
The Lakers came within one at 8:27 of the second when Nick McParland broke open the scoring for LSSU, making the score 2-1. The Wolverines retaliated at 17:10 of the period, when a slapshot from Wohlberg sailed just to the right of the LSSU goal. Guptill picked it up and fed Brown, who forced the puck through a pack of Laker defenders and into the net, but the net was displaced, prompting a review by officials. However, the goal was deemed fair, bringing the score to 3-1 heading into the second intermission.
Adam Janecyk (Ada, Mich.) substituted for Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) between the pipes in the third stanza, allowing only one goal and staving off two penalty kills.
At the 11:30 mark of the final frame, LSSU snuck one past Janecyk from right in front to shorten Michigan's lead to one. The score stayed at 3-2, until the Lakers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but Michigan took advantage, garnering an empty-netter --courtesy of Brown with 11.8 seconds remaining. Merrill and Wohlberg both picked up their second assists of the night.
Hunwick finished with 20 saves, allowing only one goal, and Janecyk turned aside seven of the eight shots against.
The Wolverines return to game action on Saturday night (Jan. 7, 7:35 p.m.) at Yost Ice Arena to complete the CCHA weekend series against the Lakers.
