ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) scored a career-high 27 points and sophomore Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) hit a big jumper with 36 seconds remaining as the University of Michigan men's basketball team (No. 18 AP/No. 16 USA Today) defeated Minnesota, 61-56, Sunday afternoon (Jan. 1) inside the Crisler Center. Michigan has now won seven games in a row and is off to its best start since the 2006-07 season.
Burke was 8-of-11 from the field, a perfect 2-of-2 from three-point range and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe in setting his career high, which previously was 20 in a win over Oakland on Dec. 10. Burke also had three assists and three rebounds in the win. Seniors Zack Novak (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) and Stu Douglass (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) had nine points apiece as the duo combined for four three-pointers. Junior/sophomore Jordan Morgan (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) had a career-high 12 rebounds, including six from the offensive end, and sophomore Evan Smotrycz (Reading, Mass./New Hampton Prep [N.H.]) had nine caroms on the day.
Michigan never trailed in the second half but could not put away a game Gopher squad. Minnesota's Rodney Williams converted a three-point play at 4:30, making it 53-50 Michigan. Burke came back with two free throws on the next possession, but Minnesota answered with a Julian Welch three, cutting the Maize and Blue advantage to 55-53 with 2:54 remaining. Burke hit two more free throws, but another Welch three cut the lead to one with 2:08 left. Michigan forced a huge shot clock violation at 1:04 and Hardaway gave the Wolverines a three-point lead with a jumper with 36 seconds left. Williams missed a three on the Gophers' next possession and Novak hit two free throws with five seconds left to seal the team's seventh straight win.
Minnesota started the contest scoring the first six points, before Michigan scored the next six points, capped by a three from Smotrycz at 13:55. Michigan took its first lead of the game (13-11) on a jumper at 9:16 from Burke, who was the catalyst for U-M's 11-0 run, scoring six straight points as his layup at 6:38 made it 17-11 Wolverines. Michigan built an eight-point lead (19-11) on two free throws from Hardaway at 4:13. Minnesota scored four straight points, but Novak answered with a three-pointer in the right corner, making it 22-15. Minnesota ended the half scoring the final four points and Michigan held a 23-19 lead at the half.
Burke scored the first five points of the second half as Michigan led 28-21 with 19:06 left. Minnesota's Hollins made a three at 17:46 to trim U-M's lead to 28-26. A Welch three at 16:31 made it 30-29 at 16:31. Minnesota tied the game at 35 on a Williams free throw at 12:30, but the Maize and Blue capitalized on a five-point possession after that triple. Douglass hit a three at 12:05 and Williams committed a foul away from the ball. Michigan got it back and Novak's layup gave the Wolverines a five-point advantage. Another Douglass three made it 43-36 with 11 minutes left. The two teams traded baskets until an Armelin three at 5:43 cut Michigan's lead to 53-49.
The Wolverines had a 36-28 rebounding advantage on the Gophers, including 15 from the offensive end. The Maize and Blue was 20-of-52 (38.5 percent) from the floor and hit six three-pointers.
Williams and Welch had 11 points apiece to lead Minnesota, while Ralph Sampson III had 10 rebounds. Minnesota shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from three-point range.
Michigan hits the road for the first time in Big Ten play this Thursday (Jan. 5) at Indiana. Tipoff is at 9 p.m. from Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind., and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
