ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The seventh-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team captured its fourth outright Big Ten regular-season title and eighth overall with a 4-2 win over Indiana Friday afternoon (Oct. 28) at Ocker Field. With the win, Michigan earns the top seed in the upcoming 2011 Big Ten Tournament and a bye in the first round of play.
The Maize and Blue fell behind the Hoosiers in the 16th minute when Audra Heilman connected from the center of the circle for her fifth goal of the season. Michigan tied the game six minutes later as freshman Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) took a pass from sophomore Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) on the left post and beat IU keeper Viki Green for her 11th goal of the year. The two teams went into the half deadlocked with Michigan having a 7-3 shot advantage and a 3-1 lead on penalty corners.
Michigan came out of the locker room and scored 26 seconds into the second half. Sophomore Rachael Mack's (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) shot from the right side of the goal went in with an assist to fifth-year senior Eileen Brandes (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth). It was Mack's team-leading 12th goal of the year.
U-M took a 3-1 lead at 51:04 when freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes) took a direct corner from sophomore/freshman Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) and buried a shot into the right corner of the goal. Indiana cut the Wolverine lead to one goal at 59:05 on a deflection from Jaclyn Zamudio, but Michigan answered with an insurance goal at 65:32 as senior Jess Allen (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional) scored her second goal of the season on a Brandes assist.
Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) earned the win in goal, stopping a season-high five shots. Green had eight saves for the Hoosiers. Michigan outshot Indiana, 14-10, and enjoyed an 11-5 advantage in corners.
Michigan will host its final regular-season game of the 2011 campaign this Sunday (Oct. 30) against No. 9 Stanford at noon. The Maize and Blue will honor its five seniors before the game as part of Senior Day at Ocker Field.
