MARQUETTE, Mich. -- One night after suffering its first loss of the season, the University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 2 USA Today, No. 1 USCHO.com) rebounded to earn two points in the CCHA standings with a 3-3 tie and 1-0 shootout win against Northern Michigan on Saturday (Oct. 22) at Berry Events Center. A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scored the game's first marker and tallied the lone goal in the shootout.
After an energetic start to the contest from both sides, Treais opened the scoring for the Wolverines as he potted his fourth goal of the season, from the right faceoff circle, to give Michigan the 1-0 lead at the 7:43 mark of the opening frame.
The Michigan power play struck next when Lindsay Sparks (Oakville, Ontario) put home his team-leading fifth goal of the campaign, opening up a 2-0 advantage midway through the first period. Sparks, who added an assist later in the game, now has five points (3g, 2a) during his current three-game point streak. Defenseman Greg Pateryn (Sterling Heights, Mich.) assisted on both of the Wolverines' first two goals, giving him five points (1g, 4a) in his last three games and two multiple-point efforts this season.
Northern Michigan cut the lead to one goal when Tyler Gron scored his third of the season for the Wildcats 10:27 into the middle frame. With Michigan forward Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) serving a hooking penalty, Gron knocked home a loose puck for NMU's first goal of the game.
Penalties would once again prove costly for the Wolverines later in the period, as Gron tallied his second power-play goal of the night to tie things up at two goals apiece at the 15:51 mark. The power play was in effect due to a Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) slashing call, and it took the Wildcats just 22 seconds to capitalize.
The tie did not last long as Michigan re-claimed the lead with less than a minute left in the second. Lynch redeemed himself for the earlier penalty and earned his first point of the season with the go-ahead goal for the Wolverines at the 19:01 mark. Sparks picked up his second point of the night with an assist.
After the intermission, the Wildcats were quick to knot things up once again. Mitch Jones found a rebound off to the side of the net and buried it for the 3-3 tie 59 seconds into the third period.
The Wildcats, along with the goal judge, thought they had scored the go-ahead goal at the 10:41 mark of the final frame. However, referees ruled it no goal on the ice and, after taking another look at it upstairs, the call was confirmed and the game remained tied at three.
After a scoreless remainder of the third period and five-minute overtime session, which saw the Wildcats kill a five-minute major penalty, the game progressed to a shootout for the first time this season.
Goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) was back between the pipes for Michigan for his sixth straight start of the season. Hunwick made 23 saves on 26 shots to move his record to 4-0-1 this season. Jared Coreau allowed three goals on 28 shots for NMU.
Michigan returns to action on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 27-28) when it hosts Ferris State for a two-game series at Yost Ice Arena. Both games are to start at 7:35 p.m.
