Miggy inching closer to batting crown

As of right now Trout is 0-2 early in this game dropping his ba to .335. Miggy finished today 3-4 and raised his ba to .329. Closest he's been to him. Expect a September run like last year when he came outta nowhere to snatch it from Adrian Gonzales. The long season plus intense pressure will finally catch up to the immortal (so-called) Trout. MVP still within reach if we make the postseason as it looks like the Angls have a tougher road being that the WC is their only option at this point.

I would love to see him win another batting title. He's 2nd in RBIs 109-112 and 5th in HRs. Trout was bound to have some kind of slump as the season comes down the stretch.

Unfortunately, unless Trout has an abysmal Septemeber I think he wins the MVP. He's having a historic season and he's so young. That's going to trump Miggy. Miggy is going to be penalized because he does this every year. Trout is the new fish that everyone likes.

There's barely enough room in cyberspace to keep track of all the historic feats Mike Trout has a chance to achieve. But here's one we've seen very little talk about:

He leads the American League in stolen bases. He leads the league in batting average. And he's just .001 point behind Josh Hamilton for the AL lead in slugging, after leading the league for much of this month.

So think about that. Could one player really be so multitalented that he could win a batting title, slugging title and stolen-base title in the same year? Oh, he could, all right. And if he does, Trout would be doing something no one else has done in … cue the percussion section, please … a mere 95 years.

Ready for the complete list of men who have led their league in those three departments in the same season? Here we go:

Ty Cobb -- in 1907, 1909, 1911 and 1917. And Honus Wagner -- in 1904, 1907 and 1908.

In other words, nobody in the live-ball era has done this. Nobody. And it's been 55 years since Willie Mays made the last serious run at it, leading the NL in steals and slugging in 1957, but finishing second to Stan Musial in the batting race.

And now along comes Mike Trout to give it a shot, as a rookie. At 21 years old. Nobody should be this great this young, friends. It's just not right.

Cabrera has the lead in slugging .591 to .583 for Hamilton and .580 for Trout. Cabrera now leads in OPS too.

Potentially Cabrera could lead the league in avg, slugging, OPS, RBIs, and be top 5 in virtually ever major hitting category. Cabrera is having a historical season too.

All true. But that's my point...no one is writing articles about how great Miggy is hitting or how he's having a historical season, etc. This is what he does every year...and he usually gets screwed out of the mvp. I think it happens again because of Trout's age, the new kid on the block factor and the fact that he has speed, power and defense combination.

How far behind is Miggy in the stolen base championship race? Any reasonable chance he could catch up? And what are his chances of winning a Gold Glove?

I think if only one makes the playoffs that might be the deciding factor for some of the more traditionalist voters.

Cabrera isn't really having a historical season.

It's not even his best season.

Trout vs. Cabrera

Average - .336 / .332 - Pretty much a wash.
HRs - 25 / 33 - Cabrera with the edge.
RBIs - 74 / 111 - Cabrera with a huge edge.
SBs - 42 / 4 - Trout with huge lead
BBs - 47 / 54 - Slight edge to Miggy, but nearly a wash.
IBBs - 4 /12 - Edge to Cabrera
OBP - .399 / .396 - Wash
Slug - .580 / .592 - Slight edge to Cabrera, nearly a wash.
OPS - .979 / .988 - Slight edge to Cabrera, nearly a wash.
Fielding - Obvious edge to Trout.

Trout really only leads in SBs and Fielding. Two things that the voters really don't look at much when deciding MVPs.
