When Oklahoma St took the intentional safety against the Aggies today on the LAST play of the game, it got me thinking.

I say that they should HAVE to free kick on an untimed down ala the "game can't end on a defensive penalty" school of thought.

Seems reasonable to me...just an idea.

i agree. i didn't see the play, but it should also be a penalty. if you can't throw it out of bounds intentionally, you shouldn't be able to do it to end the game either.

You should not have to kick(punt) the ball off after a safety once time runs out simply because if the time runs out on the game and you kick a FG you would not then have to kick the ball to the other team before the game is over.

But a TD or FG is an OFFENSIVE score....where a safety is a DEFENSIVE score....where the offense (return team) should get one shot if time has expired imo.

ok to make it seem more reasonable. they dont kick off after the defense runs in a touchdown at the end of the game so why would they after the safety?

Good point.....guess I just want to see a team protect the ball when they have shitty field position at the end of games instead of taking the safety

I don't like it, but its smart!

I watched BGSU do it to PU years ago. I was taken away by the move because I never thought of running a play like that. It is part of the game and thats just the way it is. I don't like the new NFL kick off rule, but its probably here to stay!

I think that it's a fine piece of strategery. We don't need rule changes every time a play within the confines of the existing rules outwits the opponent, officials, or the rules themselves. Innovation is good for the game. (unless its RR's idea of innovation)

At first blush I like that idea.

They didn't have to do it to begin with. There were only 5 seconds left on the clock. They snapped in the shotgun to Blackmon so they could have done the same to Weeden. He could have waited 3 seconds with jumbo protection, then heaved the ball into the air downfield to an open area (or even out of bounds since the clock doesn't stop until it hits the ground) which would have easily used up the remaining 2 seconds. Instead they hike it to a non-QB who had butter-fingers earlier in the game and lost 7 points because of it.

Wouldn't that have been great if the dropped ball came then instead and A&M fell on it to win??? Not that I cared who won other than for Pickem's.
