Tigers will need to be patient during Draft.
from the Tigers official site

Might as well start this thread early, in case anyone has thoughts about the Tigers plans, who they want the team to go after, the new salary structure, first pick at 91 in the draft.
DD's and Chadd's draft record, pitchers over positional more often,

Dont really know much about MLB prospects. But we kinda need some interior infielders.

I like the Loy guy we drafted last season. Or the year before I forget. He's suppose to need work with the bat but his SS/2B defense is suppose to be pretty good.

You can't really draft based on what the teams current needs are, because by the time these guys are ready to be called up the teams needs will likely have changed dramatically.

I'm a believer in taking the best available player, but it's still a craps shoot.

Looking for mostly depth guys in this draft, probably.

Hopefully one of them is a 2B that can hit AT LEAST .250...

Hard to get excited over the first pick being 91.

This.

Plus the Tigers drafts have pretty much been based on overspending on a player who fell due to signability to concerns, that's obviously not happening this year.

Doubtful.

This isn't the NFL or NBA, most players that reach the majors in the draft won't do so for a couple of seasons, so they won't be drafting based on what they need now.

They'll probably go PBA, while factoring in sign ability.

This is one of the weakest drafts in a long time if I read correctly. Probably won't have any talented HS prospects drop to us this year.

Heck i always forget that Jack Morris and Lou Whitaker was drafted in the 5th rounds..

Has it come to this already, something to lift our hopes and dreams of another World Championship... lol

I am pretty sure they both made the list.. Anderson and Sleeth made the list for the Tigers and Bush did also..

On the "Dodged the Bullet" list:

Todd Van Poppel was a highly touted high school prospect. The Atlanta Braves seriously considered drafting him, but Van Poppel told them out-right he would not sign with them. The guy the Braves drafted instead? One Larry Wayne "Chipper" Jones.

Figured Brein Taylor would be number one on that list.

Surprised he's not.

Looking around a few places, I see these players that Tigers have sent scouts/evaluators to check on, or are connected to from reports.

Baseball America said that Detroit --in addition to Boston -- is really into LH Georgia OF Kyle Carter, who would certainly be a great get at that level because of his polished bat and mature approach.

Preston Beck, OF, UT Arlington : Classic 6'2" 195 lbs left-handed hitting/righthanded throwing RF. Has a cannon for an arm and smooth swing with plenty of leverage in his swing. if he falls to the Tigers and they select him it's an excellent pick.

Jorge Fernandez, OF, (Puerto Rico) went from catcher to outfield.

Brett Phillips, OF, FL HS (NC State commit) -- speed and defensive ability (including perhaps the best HS OF arm in the draft) are well ahead of his hitting at this point. still, very athletic and has enough projectable power in his LH swing.

Tyler Duffey, RHP, Rice -- This wouldn't be a Tigers' draft without a middle reliever. Still, Duffey's stuff is unmistakably good. 95-96 mph heat with good hard breaking stuff.

other names,

RJ Alvarez (Florida Atlantic),

Georgia Tech outfielder Brandon Thomas,

Pat Light,

Cal second baseman Tony Renda,

California prep infielder (3B long term) Rio Ruiz. Solid defender, good arm, plus raw, potential to hit a bit if he can learn an approach.

Well the Tigers went heavy with college hitters last year, which is what I've wanted them to see draft more.

Unfortunately none of them were particularly good college hitters.

And they better not draft another RP early.
