Mlive blaming cap struggles on Millen

Oh lord. And Michigan hasn't done shit because they are still recovering from Rich Rod. After six years, it's time to not blame him for this current regime's horrid mismanagement of the cap.

I don't think it's completely insane. I'm no fan of Mayhew/Lewand, but I'll admit they were dealt a shitty hand.

The worst time to be a terrible team happened to be when the Lions were at their worst (shocker, I know). Escalating rookie contracts were getting out of hand and the Lions had top 2 picks in 3 out of the last 4 non-rookie cap years. The future cap was most certainly going to be screwed by this (and it has been).

Now Mayhew/Lewand in 2015 are responsible for all the bad/overpaid contracts and multiple restructures, so 99.9% of the blame goes on them. They needed to work some cap magic to compensate for the insane rookie contracts and they haven't really succeeded.

Millen was responsible for creating an unstoppable losing behemoth that was the late 00s Lions. Bad teams led to high picks, which led to insane rookie contracts, which led to an out-of-control cap clusterfuck...and Mayhew/Lewand didn't do enough to control it.

We HAD to restructure to add talent in 2011 and 2013 and keep talent from a playoff team in 2012. Mayhew/Lewand knew the cap was rising. Offering Suh 17 per a year is not cap trouble, it's Miami overpaying by a huge amount.

Makes sense to me Grandy. It's often been said that a blown 1st round pick will set an organization back 10 years, because of all the cap trouble it can cause later.

If that's the case, we have a logn way to go to finish shovelling the shit the beast left behind.

I don't know. Cap struggles are only one problem. Didn't someone post that 2010-2011 drafts are all gone now? Or soon to be. And Suh leaving now was Mayhew fuck up. We also have the most dead money off all teams now so how is that Millen.

dealt a shitty hand....yes

but it was mayhews choice to keep that shitty hand and pay them even more...

Millen/losing/bad CBA put us in a bad position.

Complete cap mismanagement has made that bad position worse. It's not as if we have two glorious playoff runs to show for it. We were one and done - twice. I'd trade both winning seasons for more steady progression and Suh with a manageable cap number. IMO the most on the money thing in that article was the win now mentality. I get that. Just not with the Lions. Mayhew succeeded Millen, who was an abject failure for 10 years. He might have figured that he had a long leash and dug out of this gradually rather than try to turn over the roster in 2 years.

This is mostly Mayhew and Lewand's fault.

It's really not that hard to turn things around overnight in the NFL. It's a league of total parody. You can be crap one season, great the next. Great one season, crap the next. I get tired of hearing, "They are making steps, there is progress." This isn't little league and we are training kids the fundamentals of making a jump shot.

What exactly are they trying to pin on millen? Cause its how many years later and mayhew has proven he has no idea how to draft depth. So are we blaming millen for stafford, cj and suh? Where the hell would we be without them? Guess i dont get the argument or how mayhew doesnt get most the blame...

Mayhew needed to fold that shitty hand. Instead he threw more money in like a guy with 7 high trying to bluff the pot against a guy with a royal flush.

Holy crap. Do we forget that Mayhew was Millen's top assistant at the time? It wasn't like he came in from the Pats or something he fucking bounce passed Millen that garbage team he slam dunked all over us. Mayhew had a hand in 0-16.
