Most surprising 2011 sport happening

This could be close IMO between the Lions and the Tigers. Regardless I think its safe to say its been a fun year to be a sports fan and with the young talent on our teams this could be just the beginning.

Although I am no longer as much of a college-sports fan as I was during the 70s-90s, I have to point out that those who are fans of Michigan-based amateur and professional teams should be very pleasantly surprised at how well that most of them have performed so far this year. I didn't try to keep up with how good (or bad) that the other smaller Michigan-based colleges' sports teams have performed, such as EMU, CMU, NMU, and WMU, so I hope for their fans and alma-maters' sakes that they did quite well too.

Not only should we Michigan sports fans be very happy with how '11 has turned out, there of course are also very good reasons to expect even more improvement during next year, and each for their potential for becoming nationally/regionally elite, if not also the possibility of winning championship(s) by many of them in the not too distant future.

I'm still more amazed that JV won the MVP than I am with the rest of the list. The fact that any of those could be a runner up is a perfect indication of how great 2011with has been though.

That's what I was going to say too. A pitcher, even one as good as JV, winning the MVP award is the most shocking sports story of 2011.

I knew the lions had an outside chance of making the playoffs going 8-8 / 9-7 winning an extra couple.. Michigan in a bcs game is much more surprising to me with how awful they were against the big ten and the personnel they had on defense.

Quite a few fans were saying 10 wins and playoffs for the Lions this year, so they really should not be so far ahead in the voting. I don't know of any UM fans predicitng a BCS bowl, but I 100% agree the comment about JV winning the MVP is the most shocking in no small part because for a pitcher to win the MVP it basically means all the hitters had non-MVP seasons because most voters love the offensive numbers those guys put up far more than the defensive numbers put up by a guy on a 4 or 5 day rotation.

If you hadposted this in the Tigers section or UM section you might get different results. Obviously, its going to be a bit biased here :)

It's suprising that U of M won 10 games??? Did you see that schedule??

Funny.

Michigan goes 6-6 next year.

Book it, Danno!!!

they went 8-2 against bowl teams.....hardly a cupcake schedule

Let's take a look at those wins again bowl eligible teams, I will throw all the wins were the opponent had a winning or .500 record in to show a larger sampling.

OSU 6-6 (3-5 in the Big Ten)
Ill 6-6 (2-6 in the Big Ten)
Purdue 7-6 (4-4 in the Big Ten)
Northwestern 6-6 (3-5 in the Big Ten
Nebraska 9-3 (5-3 in the Big Ten)
Eastern Mich 6-6 (0-2 in the Big Ten)
ND 8-4 (2-1 in the Big Ten)
Western Mich 7-6 (0-3 in the Big Ten)
San Diego State 8-5 (1-0 in the Big Ten)

4 of the "bowl eligible teams" are in the Big Ten and NONE of them had a winning record in the Big Ten. Another wins over are Western Michigan, San Diego State, and Eastern Mich. I will give you ND as a quality win (even if lucky) and Nebraska was a awesome win for blue. But don't kid yourself, it was a cupcake schedule. Michigan's ONLY quality wins were at home, none on the road. Only two games against quality opponents on the road they lost pretty easily.

You will be in for a rude awakening next fews year if you don't see that you played an easy schedule however luckily for you OSU will still be down and you don't play Wis for at least 4 years.

Neutral field against Bama
@ ND
@ Nebraska
vs MSU

As a Michigan fan I will say this...the Big Ten was dogshit and that is why we were able to win 10 games. This team was far from great. But it certainly looks like this program is back on the rise again.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This

MSU and Wis were good, rest were average.

Regardless of how bad the B10 was or is. The fact remains we won 10 games. You can rip on us for 8 home games or our schedule all you want but U of M won 10 games. MSU had a lower SOS than Michigan did. U of M will be back on top sooner rather than later and it scares MSU fans to death that their ride is OVER!

Does not scare me at all, that is just what most michigan homers think (reminds me of spartan fans from the 90s).... in fact I want UM to be back so we can have some quality games and make the big ten stronger. I am a bit different than most spartys as I have a degree from both so I do root for both schools but will always bleed green. UM is on its way back just not there yet and I look forward to when the Big Ten becomes strong again with MSU, UM, WI, NB, and OSU are all in the top 20 continually. Be excited but be realistic just like I was last year for State when we went 11-1 and had a weak schedule and no OSU.

SCARES MSU fans??

Yeah, i'm terrified.

U of M should try showing up for a Paul Bunyan game once in a while. When they do....i'll be "scared" of their return.

Until then....123-72 over four years is good enough for me.

To this day i can look at the total runs in the NYY series and wonder how the hell we beat them lol. Our offense was horrid in the playoffs.
