M's 2015 defense

It was more Connor Cook than anything. Hes making really tough passes even on the run and proving he is ne of the tops in the league. The last 3 games hes come back into last years form. Our run game did next to nothing.

Both run games were shut down. Cook had an inefficient completion percentage, but he hit big plays. Kid is really good and M's D kept him under 50%. Can't ask for much more from your D against a really good passing attack.

It was ok last year, but there were plenty of holes. I mean they let Gary Nova throw for 404 yards. Making Nova look like Elway isn't really a sign of a good defense.

This year is totally different. They are special. If we had a QB, this would be one hell of an amazing season.

The D has been very good this year, next year they will be scary. The O needs more than just a QB. Still need work on the O line, and they still need an outstanding running back. It has been a good year so far and they will continue to improve.

I'm not trying to take this too far off track since my comment was in reference to the defense being too aggressive vs not enough but i thought he shouldn't have been kicked out based the replay. I then watched this video (by a MSU writer) but he's a great football analyst and I agree with him.

For those who don't watch it, it basically says that bolden comes off moving a lot faster than conklins arm was moving and conklin was holding him with his right hand as well. he wasn't thrown into Cook and he was going for his head. The replay officials reviewed it and agreed

This is just fucking stupid. I guess they don't teach physics at MSU, or at least not very well. If you are going to try to analyze an event at least educate yourself. Have you ever heard of the Law of Conservation of Momentum? The offensive lineman outweighs Bolden probably by 100 lbs maybe more. He is pushing Bolden back and twists to the right and throws him down. You already confirmed that he was holding onto Bolden. Bolden being of a smaller mass is going to fall with a greater velocity than what the O lineman's mass is moving in accord with the law of conservation of momentum. And then the offensive lineman's momentum carries his mass also down and to the right. Watch the film again, down and to the right, down and to the right. The O lineman's momentum almost carries him down on top of Bolden and Cook. The laws of physics don't lie. No targeting, no penalty on Bolden. But there clearly was a penalty on the O lineman for holding. How they missed this on replay is unexplainable.

I love how Spartan fans are saying the D was intense. Go watch how they played in the three shutouts, then compare that to the MSU game. While they played well vs MSU, the intensity and absolute nastiness was missing. Add to that the mental lapses resulting in penalties that sustained drives, that was far from the best the D has played.

Does MSU deserve credit? Sure. They managed to win a game that UM lost more due to their multiple screw ups and mental lapses coupled with reduced nastiness on defense. Congrats on beating UM during a down week mentally. Again, how they could not be mentally razor sharp for that game is a mystery, but they were definitely not consistently focused.

Actually you explained it very well. The replay ref got their science education either at MSU or their professor was MSU educated.

They weren't down Zyxt. I don't know where you are getting that from. If anything, they played with more defensive intensity than I've seen, they just went up against an opponent with a very good offense.

He seemed fine and wrote a good post after the game but neurotic and furious over a week later. :hmm:

Id have been pissed for a day tops.

That was when i was pissed at what appeared to be extremely bad officiating more than anything else. I'm not off the rails with this, just giving my opinion that the D played with less emotion and were mentally not as focused as in prior games.

That original post still stands, I hope MSU wins out as I would much rather they be in the playoffs and win an NC than OSU.

Does it really look like he's pushing him? if anything, Conklin's arm looks somewhat limp, not as if he's forcibly throwing him onto Cook. there is also no follow through from Conklin, but regardless, there is no provision in the targeting rule that exempts you if you are blocked into someone. the definition of targeting is met if you lead with your helmet (check) towards a defenseless player (check). Bolded was obviously trying to come off of the block and get to Cook as he should, I don't think Conklin forced him to lead with his head, make eye contact and not avoid Cooks head. Two flags were thrown on this play and the officials upheld it. I'd trust three officials over one biased fan.

If the D wasn't focused and didn't play with intensity in a rivalry game in front of 110k people with a chance to win the big ten and make the CFP, those guys shouldn't have scholarships. I would say that coaches should be blamed for not having their team ready to play but honestly, they shouldn't have to motivate them. Michigan's defense was not sluggish, slow to the line, slow off the ball, etc. it just sounds like sour grapes, the penalties were a result of too much emotion if anything. You are entitled to your opinion but that doesn't make it correct.

I make an observation about M's really good defense and it starts (another) petty fecal-storm of conspiracy-theory videos, physics lessons, revealed ignorance on what a punt-return team is and does and attempts to measure intangibles like "focus" and "intensity."

My Lord, people, what is wrong with you?

back on topic... just about the only bad defensive stat is red zone defense, and even there it's a little misleading due to sample size... opponents have only been in our RZ 8 times all season, fewer than everyone else.

67 YPG 4 TD allowed Long run of 29 yards. I'll take it.

Clearly the offending O lineman (#74 Conklin I guess, though the name is not important) is holding and twisting Bolden down and to the right. That Bolden is being thrown down is clearly evident in all videos I have seen. It is impossible for a person to control where their body is going to go when they are being thrown down by a larger heavier person. Finally, if you watch the video to the end #74's momentum nearly carries his considerable body mass down on top of Bolden and Cook. So, yes he was pushing Bolden down and to the right. Despite your backpedalling and twisted argument the video you provide is the final proof that there was clearly no penalty committed by Bolden . The refs got it WRONG and Michigan and Bolden have had to pay the price.

Now go away before I have to hurt you some more.

Some people believe what they see, others see what they believe. I guess the two officials who watched it on the field and the replay official who watched it numerous times from different angles all had it out for Michigan.

Clearly those refs and officials did a great job that game.

They missed it, you are in the .000001 percent who thinks its a good call.

I thought the refs sucked for most of the game, but I generally don't question them when they get the chance to review something. I originally thought it was a bad call but after reviewing it the refs had no choice but to toss him.
