My case for trading Castellanos and Porcello/Crosby for Upton

1. Tigers need a RH corner outfielder that also has speed and power (That leaves Torrii Hunter, Melky Cabrera, BJ Upton, and Justin Upton as available options this offseason)

2. Tigers nucleus is all in between the ages of 25-30 (Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera, Austin Jackson, Prince Fielder, Max Scherzer, Doug Fister, Alex Avila, possibly Anibal Sanchez if he stays).

3. Nick Castellanos earliest chance at playing 3B for the tigers would be in the year 2015, by which the Tigers window for winning begins to close.

4. Nick Castellanos value would plummet playing RF, at best becoming an Alex Gordon on a scale of major leaguers. Which isn't bad, but still isn't Justin Upton on his average day.

5. Torri Hunter clearly wants to stay in LA (even stating he'd take a pay cut), BJ Upton doesnt get on base, and Melky might be Delmon Young part 2 without the his enhancements.
6. Adding Justin Upton to the nucleus would ensure the Tigers would have 5 out of 9 position spots would have all-star calibur talent through the year 2015 (and potentially beyond.)
7. If trading porcello in the deal, the Tigers could potentially get Trevor Bauer in return (reportedly, he is on the block also).

Alex Gordon was better than Upton last year, and the year before.

OP: Alex Gordon is a very good player and I'd take him over either Upton in a second.

I think the Tigers can get a stop gap type player via a trade that has similar production as Upton that wouldn't cost them Castellanos.

Wasn't it reported that Upton has a no trade clause involving several cities one of which was Detroit?

He's be a nice addition, but would not be my first choice.

Melky for $7.5MM is a far better gamble (risk/return). The guy has something to prove following his suspension and $7.5MM in today's market is not egregious money....especially for a guy that was leading the NL in hitting before his bust. No trade necessary.

We gotta keep some of these kids to see if they mature. Especially position players.

I dont want Upton. Especially at the cost in a trade that I have seen. he is a head case and we have good team chemistry and that can be just as important. Let someone else overpay for him.
