Paterno a scapegoat?

Rioting and blaming the media?

Threatening to burn down their own school?

Egads!

a coworker of mine told me at lunch that he's been deleting and/or blocking all his penn state friends on facebook because of the insane things they've been posting. I'm lucky I don't have any Penn St friends.

due to the nature of the scandal, I feel they've even surpassed ohio fans for sheer awfulness. Although ohio fans were claiming the same thing about Tressel being a "scapegoat..." I guess we can't know for sure if they still would've gone there if Tressel had been fired after being aware of similar conduct by a member of his staff.

The ones I know -- professionally -- are disgusted, embarrassed and sickened by it. A few friends, seemingly far less informed, were asking last night why Paterno got screwed.

I emailed the link to the GJ testimony and the replies ranged from, "Oh my God" to "no wonder."

well, good for them for actually being reasonable enough to read the allegations before continuing to make excuses.

judging from the quotes from kids down in Paternoville, they would try to bite you if you so much as implied JoePaterno wasn't morally equivalent to Jesus Christ throughout this ordeal.

it is pretty weird that I don't know ANY Penn State fans. seems like not too many end up here in the windy city.

My wife's cousins all went there, from the Philly area and some of her uncles are fans, though not Alumni.

And Champ -- where is the thread/post where you (or your friend) speculated that McQueary might have threatened to go public..?

that was in the "Paterno Fired" thread, last page.

the basis for his claim was that McQueary was still around, and supposedly coaching this weekend. The fact that he was still around, seemed like he was the only one to come out of this one with his reputation somewhat intact. although, given that time frame... 2002-2010... I'm not so sure. You figure even IF his superiors threatened him, or tried to bury it, that's a long time to stew. He should've resigned, went directly to the police, and looked for a new job.

In the Freep's timeline, though, I think the impetus may have come from the last victim & his parents:

- Sandusky was banned from the kid's highschool in '08.

- Not sure when the grand jury was convened, but it was obviously called sometime before McQueary testified in December 2010.

- At least at the federal level, and I'm guessing in PA, the proceedings of a grand jury are secret. typically only their findings & recommendations are disclosed. I don't think the existence of the grand jury itself is secret, but I don't know for sure. And even if it was, these assholes were called to testify at it!

SO... you'd think sometime last year, or at least before this season, the dipshits in Happy Valley would've said, "You know, they convened a Grand Jury to investigate Sandusky... and we've been subpoenaed to tesitify there... maybe we should call a press conference to deal with this up front and at least save shred of credibility with the public before it blows up."

but no, they went the "typical asshole in a position of power" route, and lived in denial until the bitter end.

Seems like they head to the East Coast after graduation. I always run into a bunch when I visit my brother in law in/near Baltimore.

I watched a bunch of it this morning. Really sucked to see people act like that, and should be ashamed of their comments.

Yeah, the PSU fans are pieces of shit, but that's what you get with dumb fucking college students(no offense). They react before they read. That's why college is a cult and i'm glad I survived.

Stupid kids. Parents tuition hard at work. this has turned down right disgusting. If I was a student there I would transfer but not act like an idiot.

I hope the hole organization gets blown up.

Fuck Penn State!

Can you imagine being a PSU recruit touring the facilities and seeing 'THE' Showers...?

If I was the new head coach, i would make them rebuild every place that man ever stepped foot in. After this season, every shower would be redone and unrecognizable.

This made my stomach turn. I hope they bulldoze the place and start anew...

Football is screwed for years to come. No one, and I mean no one, is going to want to be made fun of for going to Penn St. Or being ridiculed for picking them over some other school. It really is a beyond crazy situation. A whole institution has been brought to the brink of death. This is unfathomable.

Hopefully, other schools won't use this situation as a negative recruiting tool.

But I am sure they will

I would have to imagine HS recruits will be cancelling if they had a visit this weekend. Not immensely important considering the gravity of the situation, but you have to imagine PSU had pegged this weekend as a big visit weekend.
