NCAA allows confs to vote to give athletes more

Wow, that's a big step. That gives the BCS schools, or whoever approve this measure, a HUGE advantage over the conferences who can't afford it.

Spending to women's programs must match men's.

Do the math on giving every male and female scholarship holder at a school an additional $2K. This could get expensive

as far as the increases to GPA, and APR, $5 says the SEC and ohio have already found a way to cheat those.

feel that? it's the slippery slope.

Don't talk to me about slippery slopes..lol

if you are trying to compare this rule to a local ordinance enacted to ban a demonstrated fire hazard with no logical basis to believe it could lead to legislative overreach, you are sorely mistaken.

He is making that comparison, and it's funny, and when my karma granting power returns from exalting your slippery slope comment, the humor will be rewarded. (also, your Dantonio quote...that's also worthy.)

Paying players will be a big mistake

Well, I like it because they aren't just paying players - they're paying ALL players a small "living expenses" allotment. So a track player is getting as much as Denard Robinson.

Wow I could live so much more comfortably with an extra 2 grand.

I'm gonna guess this doesn't apply to the Ivy League, since they don't even give out athletic scholarships.

so much for wanting parity.

There's no money in parity. There's money in keeping the biggest fanbases in the biggest games.

There was talk on a Houston sports radio show about how women athletes should not get paid as much as men since their sports don't bring in as much money. So, the "I should get paid more because I am better than...." has already started. It is inevitable. The star players will stilll sell jerseys, etc. to make more money and justify it by arguing that they deserve more and can't live on a measely $2K. And then what? Will the NCAA pay them more?

i haven't been on but on lately but i really don't like this
heard brandon yesterday and he says it is important as the kids we recruit from calif often don't have money to travel back and and forth - i want to say waht about federal loans like other students?

and they are allowing to conferences to decide so obviosuoy the big conferences will do it but not sure how schools can all afford this given that only about 20% of athletic departments even at FBS level are self supporting

and the 2000 is for all scholarship athletes but most sports are split scholies

ps i think coaches salaries should be capped - they have gotten out of control

I agree with MichLady on this one. I think that if these kids want to have more money, why not TAKE STUDENT LOANS like I have to do for the next several years to become a doc? If they end up making the NFL then they can pay it back in no time. If not, GET A JOB and pay it back after you GRADUATE! The entire structure of being paid for sports and entertainment has gone beyond the point of lunacy in this country....

Recently I've advocated allowing the kids to borrow some of their scholarship money instead of being paid. Before the Pitt/UConn game Wednesday night, Lou Holtz made a good point when he pointed out all the kids with iPods and BOSE headsets down on the field. But I get it that if you're going to ban these kids from working during the season, you HAVE to open some door for them to get some spending money. Why not let them borrow the $2,000 from their scholarship? Then they can get a student loan to cover the last 2 grand of their bill, and graduate with a small $8,000 student loan debt, which is pennies compared to the vast majority of their peers, whose tuition, fees, and room & board help pay the schollies.

And why can a kid on a music scholarship get paid to pay his violin at a wedding reception, but Denard Robinson can't get paid to run a football camp some spring at his old high school?

They would have to put a cap on it otherwise you would have a kid making 50k for standing around smiling. Or something like TP did and just hand out envelopes of cash.

I had the same thought. A student loan is a very normal thing for a student to have so long as there's a good set of rules in place keeping it legit.
