I recall last year Mr. I talking about the future of the Tigers after he eventually passes, and it pretty much sounded like his kids weren't really up for taking the team over. He said something to the affect that it wouldn't be fair to burden them with a challenge they weren't passionate about.

I'm thinking that he may already have a gentleman's agreement with the next owner(s).

In that same article, he talked about Dan Gilbert's passion for Detroit, and I've always heard that Gilbert really wants to own the Tigers. I'm really thinking he might be the next owner. What do you guys think?

I think most all of us thought of this after the press conference and seeing Mr. Ilitch. It kind of reminded me of Steinbrenner as an old/aging owner and his sons, but unless I missed them, didn't see Mr. I's adult children there.
So it does sound like they don't have the same passion for the Tigers. and/or the RedWings, geez all his holdings...the Pizza empire etc.
That very well could be true about a gentlemen's agreement. I don't know much about Dan Gilbert. But judging from how much love Mr. I has for the city of Detroit, you would think he wants a similar type person to sell the Tigers to at that point in time.

Maybe we here on the Detroit Tigers Proboards forum et.al could/should offer our services to group-oversee the franchise's day-to-day ownership, if Ilitch's kids aren't up to the task or are not sufficiently motivated.

:)

Dunno if we would unilaterally agree on retaining DD as the club 's GM, (probably most would) and his assistants, absent his promotion into soon becoming MLB's CEO, but hey, I already know in advance, whose days would most certainly become numbered on Leyland's coaching staff, as well as certain "role" players on the 25 and 40 man roster too...haha!!

We no doubt would make the late Captain Hook (Sparky Anderson RIP) appear like he was identical to the biblical Job in comparison on game-days, though...lol.

;)

Personally i would like the owner to own one team but if he is dedicated I'm fine with it.

As long as the man that Gilbert is currently tied with @ #193 Manny Maroun, with ~1.5 B doesn't buy the Tigers franchise. He is a self-made billionaire in transportation, who also happens to own the now long abandoned ruins of the building that I once worked in during the mid-70s through mid-80s, being the Michigan Central Station, if that is any example of how well he "takes care" of his real-estate holdings, then I don't want him OR his family to get anywhere near CoPa and especially owning the Tigers club....yikes!!

Based on the way the Cavs are run I want no part of Dan Gilbert.
What are you talking about? He's made the Cavs relevant since taking over in '05. He dumped a lot of cash into the arena and team and did everything possible to try to keep LeBron there. They should be good again quickly after drafting Irving and Thompson last year. I personally loved it when he called out LeBron for quitting on the organization and being a punk with "The Decision" garbage he did.

Outside of all of that, he dumps lots of money into Detroit, Cleveland and Cincinnati. He moved Quicken Loans downtown, bringing 4,000 jobs with him, and has bought about half a dozen big buildings to renovate in Detroit. He's behind a group opening casinos in Cleveland and Cincy right now too.

I like that he's a self-made man too. I'd much rather have that in an owner than one who got handed money and never had to work for anything. That's part of what made Davidson and part of what makes Ilitch so great.

He is also 80 so he wouldn't be around long. I would much rather have Mark Cuban, the passion the guy runs the Mavs with is unmatched[/quote:lvmvwypd]

Oh I am sorry I don't want DeVos.. I was just looking at what he was worth... I think they own the Magic still.

He should be even higher quickly too since he's getting into the money printing business (i.e., casinos), and he seems to be advertising his other businesses and making great investments during this down market too.

You're absolutely right that money begets money.

it's not how much you have, but how much you are willing to spend. the Cavs have the 12 largest payroll, that's not gonna cut it here, especially after having MR I with his deep pockets. and it better be some kind of pizza owner. lol

Yeah, I think that Gilbert would be a great owner. He definitely cares about sports and winning and also seems extremely competitive. I think that he is the kind of guy that would keep the Tigers at about the same payroll. And yeah, I would also love Cuban. I really thought he was going to be invited back for the final round of bidding when he was trying to buy the Cubs, I heard that they really didn't want him, but I'm not sure on how the whole situation went down. He offered something like 1.3 billion for the Cubs I believe.
