Next owner?

Based on the way the Cavs are run I want no part of Dan Gilbert.
What are you talking about? He's made the Cavs relevant since taking over in '05. He dumped a lot of cash into the arena and team and did everything possible to try to keep LeBron there. They should be good again quickly after drafting Irving and Thompson last year. I personally loved it when he called out LeBron for quitting on the organization and being a punk with "The Decision" garbage he did.

Outside of all of that, he dumps lots of money into Detroit, Cleveland and Cincinnati. He moved Quicken Loans downtown, bringing 4,000 jobs with him, and has bought about half a dozen big buildings to renovate in Detroit. He's behind a group opening casinos in Cleveland and Cincy right now too.

I like that he's a self-made man too. I'd much rather have that in an owner than one who got handed money and never had to work for anything. That's part of what made Davidson and part of what makes Ilitch so great.

Don't kid yourself. The Cavs were turned around not because of him but because of the lucky ping pong ball that let them draft Lebron. As far as him calling out Lebron....I think that was the most bush league thing I have ever seen an owner do. That was 7th grade girl stuff if you ask me.

Even the former minor-league ballplayer Mike Ilitch quite obviously didn't really concentrate upon or pay very much close attention to the mostly losing Tigers' teams and its farm clubs' woes during the 90s, although perhaps that was mostly due to his wanting to move the ballclub and HQ, lock, stock, and tiger-tails, into a new location, in an area of downtown Detroit where he owned, managed, and controlled more property. But even during the early 00s, the franchise, new ballpark or not, was still one of MLB's biggest laughing stocks, as we all know. It took the utter failure and historic humiliation of the '03 season to really light a fire under Mikey's pants.

I really don't expect the Tigers franchise's next or succeeding owner(s) to largely ignore the club like Mike Ilitch had at first, even if they wanted to, b/c of all of the money already locked in and invested in the clubs short/long term future, but despite all of the local and state's somewhat "rosier" economic forecasts and indications, it may take yet another decade or so, if ever, before the franchise again fields teams that are serious WS contenders, once their current core ages and/or some/much of it leaves via FA or trades. The franchise's short and esp. longer-term fate may and likely WILL rest upon how much longer Mike Ilitch can still capably own it, that is, IF he lucidly and physically lives late into his 80s or perhaps even a bit longer.

I completely agree with Tom. He acted like a 10 year old girl after Lebron left. He threw a hissy fit and he did it in public. He bad mouthed Lebron, etc. So if I'm a big name free agent, why would I want to sign with Cleveland after seeing that? If I decide when my contract expires in Cleveland that I want to sign somewhere else than I have to deal with my dramatic owner trying to crucify me in the media. No thanks. I'll just stay away and sign somewhere else.

How is Gilbert any different than Cuban? They are both passionate about their teams and aren't afraid to voice their opinions. They actually seem to care, whether you agree or disagree with their actions/opinions. That's what I like about they two.

I'm not saying i wouldn't enjoy either and that Gilbert isn't passionate, I'm just saying I'd prefer Cuban because Gilbert was a complete asshole when Lebron left and was embarrassing.

This is actually pretty scary to think about. What if we're sold to an owner that wants to play moneyball like the A's or the Marlins (used to)

Sounds like a good way to get run out of town.

All i'm saying is that whoever owns the team after Illich goes, better be willing to spend money. He doesn't have to be the yankees, but at least willing to spend to add key pieces and keep his players.

While everyone's talking about the next Tiger owner, we're forgetting that someone would have to get the Red Wings too.

It will be a sad day for Detroit Sports when Mr. I is no longer with us.

While Gilbert did sound like a @#$%@ when he said that stuff after LeBron left, it also got the fans fired up and kept attendance up for the Cavs for the first 20 or so games of the season. I think that it gave fans the opportunity to relate with their owner, and I think that they enjoyed it.
