NFL plans to charge performers for the privileged of playing the SB

This is pretty ridiculous.

I don't know if getting performers to pay YOU for the privilege of playing at your event is super cheap and sleazy, or just a "new way of looking at entertainment" (or some bullshit claim like that.)

alternatively, or maybe in addition, the NFL asks that they ?be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league.?

previously... if you wanted someone to play at your wedding, bar mitzvah, retirement party, corporate shareholders meeting, or halftime show, you just paid them for their services...

Knowing what I know about popular music, artists usually earn their street cred by building a fanbase themselves, then selling out and riding that wave down. Building your audience by literally selling out to Pro Football seems totally counter-intuitive. I would fire my manager if they even suggested it.

I'm not sure anyone would rush out to see that pop-bubblegum act that played the Super Bowl ... unless they burned down the stage or started a riot in the mosh pit or something like that. And if they did that, I'm sure the NFL would be suing the crap out of them.

Great now the Super Bowl halftime will be pure preteen pop acts or washed up artists that want one last kick at the can.....wait...uh....

I'm guessing it's going to be mostly preteen or mall acts with a marketing budget behind them, and tie-ins to shows on Nickelodeon and Disney.

washed up acts probably won't be willing to risk their remaining money on the NFL's fee, and what normal adult goes out and buys an album because they liked the way it sounded during the Super Bowl halftime show?

Not the normal adult...but

(CNN) -- Perhaps Bruno Mars really did win the Super Bowl.
According to Billboard, the Grammy-winning singer is set to return to the charts after his halftime performance on Sunday. It reports that sales of his latest album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," rose by 164% after Mars took to the Super Bowl stage with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The album was released in December 2012.
Such an increase in sales is not rare or unexpected. Last year's halftime performer, Beyonce, reportedly saw a bump in sales of her "4" album by 123%.

The last time I watched a halftime show was Aerosmith singing Walk This Way, with a bunch of other stars coming on singing the same song. Might have been the last SB I watched as well.

I always watch the SB but never watch the halftime show. To me the SB is just a reason to get together with friends and have a party.

I used to do that but no one ever seems to want to get together anymore and now that I'm in Arizona..

Ink, any SB parties?

So you bought Bruno Mars album because of the Super Bowl halftime show?

Does anyone actually go buy a coke or a bottle of Ketchup after seeing a commercial but they still make the commercials..

sales do rise after effective ad campaigns. that's always been the problem with traditional advertising... advertisers can see it works (increased sales following a promotion), but can't see exactly who goes and buys things because of it.

I had no idea appearing in the SB halftime show really boosted sales, until tomdalton pointed that fact out. I don't know what guys watching the games go out and buy bruno mars or beyonce... so presumably it's the female fans (?) or kiddies.

I understand why extremely greedy organizations like the NFL would see stats like that, and say, "Oooh... Now YOU pay US" but it crosses a line.

Then again, idiots watch the Super Bowl for the ads... another way to look at the halftime show is that it's just another ad, but one for a crappy entertainer.
