Obama wants election day to be a holiday

Surely this is something that would get bipartisan support...

...

...

Right?

corporate america will fight another paid holiday tooth and nail.

ergo, most Republicans and a handful of the "centrist" democrats will oppose it, though they will have a harder time than usual trying to spin the reasons why if obama puts it so bluntly. my guess is they will say something about how they are *barely* making any money now (sad face) and this one (1) more paid holiday for already overworked and underpaid workers will likely result in mass layoffs and bankrupt small businesses.

therefore we can't have it. no.

now STFU and GBTW.

I'd rather just have an election week or weekend, a multiple day opportunity to vote. I don't understand why it's necessary to cram it all into one day.

More legit than the proposal to make the Monday after the SuperBowl a holiday ...

Absentee ballot. It's the way to go..

Get rid of Columbus Day. It's by far the stupidest of the Federal Public Holidays.

I've always lived close enough to my polling place to be able to walk to vote. And I imagine it's the same for everybody.

So if we all had election day off from work we would at least be able to get drunk enough before voting to stomach the choices that we have to vote for, without having to break the law and be traffic hazards.

I think we've already got enough holidays as it is, any new ones should replace another

I'm sure republicans and democrats both know the demographics of who this would impact and that will be the entire motivation along which party lines will split. All the other arguments, while they may or may not be valid, they aren't why anyone will care. It's like satellite camps. We argue about benefits and costs to the attendees, but we all know it's about recruiting.

I couldn't tell you the last "Holiday" I had off, so I don't give a shit. But on the surface it sounds like a good idea.

Neither side should be mad at this if it gets more people to vote ;)

President's day, Columbus Day or MLK

You have just mentioned 3 holidays that many workforce people don't get off in the first place.

Not surprisingly, you missed the whole fucking point again.

Most people in the normal work force don't get federal holidays off anyway. The only holidays most people get off are Xmas, New Years (if those holidays fall on a weekday), thanksgiving, labor day, the 4th and Memorial day. If the government declares another federal holiday for "voting day" most of the country is just going to work anyway...just like the rest of the useless federal holidays. The only people that are going to get off are people that work for schools, federal and state employees, and banks will be closed. Those are all people that don't need another fucking paid vacation day!

I like how almost every 1st world country shuts down so 90+% of their country can vote but the "Land of the free" can't even take a shift off from waitressing at the local diner or serving popcorn at the movie theatre to go vote. Some fucked up priorities we have.
