OFFICIAL: Draft Day (Day One-Three)

I don't think you do, lol. Sorry, I'm just tired but need is not part of BPA. As Schwartz says all the time, when you go after need, you sometimes reach and then the next year you might have to reach for the same need. So he goes talent over need. Whether you like it or not, its the way they operate. We all saw it last season when we selected a DT at 13, the year after we took Suh and traded for Williams.

no, i do understand it. i just don't like it, especially when you can't be flexible.

I think there is a little flexibility in their plan. I mean I didn't expect them to take a QB in round 1 but when Nate is gone, probably after this season, this guy is the new slot. I would have rather had a corner myself, or that C but they always sick to their board. If his acl heals he could be good.

i like broyles. the question is...does he add enough to our team to justify him over Trumaine Johnson or one of the other OL?

I read some expert blogs who really like Bently, did well at Senior bowl, a value pick. As far as Broyles, no one but Mayhew and Schwartz can answer that. Overall, I'm kind of digging it. Digging all 3 picks.

There was way too much talent that fell to us in rd 2 to justify taking Broyles. Two years from now if hes catching 80-100 passes cool...ill get it. But right now the dude can barely walk and is 4th on the depth chart and if he moves up on the depth chart then hes taking time away from Burleson and Titus. BPA doesnt make much sense to me when it means youre taking a 4th string WR instead of a starting calibur oline, de or cb. David or Curry would have been a studs on our defense. Konz or Adams would have been great depth and future starters along the line. Hayward, Robinson or Tru would have been our #2 cbs. The kid might get 40 catches this year....youre telling me thats better than having a starting CB or S?

and.....when you pass on 2nd rd cbs you then end up with 3rd rd cbs. If you want to see how 3rd Rd CBs do take a look at Spievey. Itll be a miracle if Bentley turns out to be anything more than a Nickel CB. At that point you could have still plugged in starters at S in martin or allen, OLB in Terrel Manning, G in James Brown or Brandon Washington, or grab a young KVB clone in Crick.

I like the players they drafted but i hate our draft because of what it could have been.

Reiff, Lavonte David, Antonio Allen would have been my draft thus far. 3 starters day 1 instead of 1 starter, 1 Nickel and 1 cripple :D

Okay coach, lol. You know David and Allen could suck? I think Broyles could be a good slot, toughness, good hands. We'll see. For myself, I have no idea who'll be the better pro. And my mind is tired from thinking about it, just gonna let it play out.

This...

What if wideout is the BPA in the second round in the next eight drafts? We just going to stockpile receivers and play 'em all over the gridiron?

I'd like to beat teams 45-20 instead needing to hang 84 on 'em since our defense is going to give up 70...

No, that's silly. When Nate is gone, he moves into the slot. Draft to their strong suit even if a year ahead of time. You're not a surprised are you? When all said and done, half the draft picks will suck so see how it plays out. They've built a pretty good team here after 0-16.

And do you really care if we win 100-94 rather than 21-16? A wins a win..

I am still confused about the Broyles pick but I am OK with it. The guy has talent and should be better than several of the WR's that went ahead of him. That being said they did ignore need again and our defense is a major concern. But if nothing else our offense should be fun as hell to watch.

Yes, as a matter of fact, that is exactly what the Lions would do. If BPA were a WR the next 8 years in a row, they draft him.

BPA is not just a philosophy that pertains to filling holes in the draft, and Mayhew said so three years ago. He said you can never have too many good players. He also said if you have three really great QBs, then you have one or two that can be traded to another team for the players you need, because another team will always need a great QB.

Obviously not a direct quote, it was three years ago.

Point is, yes, adding a fifth very good WR would allow us to potentially trade one for a CB, and at the same time, keep our WR corpse young.

It's the very reason why I say BPA is BPA... if we get to our pick next year in round one and BPA is a QB, we take him. If it's a DT, we take him. And if it's a WR, we take him. Then lets see who needs a QB, a DT, or a WR in those cases and lets the trades being.

For a lot of these guys you might have to hold onto them for a year or two and let them prove themselves, but consider what the Cardinals gave up for Kolb, what several teams were willing to give up for Flynn, and what Texas gave up for Shaub.

you're on glue if for ANY reason you think the Lions would draft a QB in round 1 of next years draft....lol

BPA has it's limits.....

Well I am a little surprised...especially with the injury...but at least you understand why we're questioning the pick.

A win is a win, Mitch, but I'll be nervous as hell at the end of games if the other team has the ball and we're clinging to a six point lead. It's not good for the ol' ticker...I'm only 33 and would like to see a few more decades.

Hey, if people are gonna quote Clayton, I'm going to quote Kiper. One good moron deserves another...

Notables: Tampa Bay gets one of my favorite players in the draft with Lavonte David -- and at No. 57! Worry all you want about his size; that's a pretty great value in my opinion, and he's a need fit. Huge couple of days for the Bucs. They're drafting starters. ... I thought Ryan Broyles to Detroit might have been a slight luxury pick, but he could be a total steal for value, and it looked better when the Lions got Dwight Bentley in the third round. Bentley is a corner and fills a big need; like the value. ... The Chargers also locked in a ton of value getting Kendall Reyes and Brandon Taylor. That's D-line and safety help. ... The Eagles got a perfect fit for that team in Mychal Kendricks; he can step in next to DeMeco Ryans. With those two and Fletcher Cox around, you feel better about Philly up the middle. No surprise Andy Reid added another QB, either. Nick Foles has starter potential. ... Cordy Glenn at No. 41 is a really nice get for Buffalo, and the Bills added some depth at wide receiver later on. ... Green Bay has to feel better about its defense after two days. Jerel Worthy is a good value at No. 51 overall. ... I called LaMichael James an "accent piece" in San Francisco. The 49ers have given Alex Smith weapons. Now it's Smith's turn.

I want a stout defense as much as the next guy and the pick surprised the hell out of me, didn't expect it. But I'm probably more optimistic than most and I'll just go with it. I'll trust Mayhew until its time not to. I trusted Millen at one point until I realized he didn't know what the hell he was doing..

We have a dead receiver? Probably should just bury him and not worry about keeping him fresh.

Guess I'm on glue then, because I don't believe at all that MM and The Schwartz are afraid to take any position with any pick. I think they rate the guys out, they grade them, and follow those grades even to a fault.

And even beyond that, there are still questions about Staffords ability to stay healthy (though I am hopeful that Reiff will have something to say about that) and Hill won't be here forever. Having a young, very good QB as a backup an potential replacement down the road is not a bad idea at all.

I'm not by any means saying I want a QB round one next year. I'm saying if a guy they really liked and rated well fell into their laps and he was the best guy on the board, I think they would pull the trigger on it.

Nate is getting old...

And I Just woke up. Prior to coffee and smoke, all typos must be laughed at and forgiven. I don't operate well before the third cup.

And I actually like the Bentley pick...it kind of makes up for the Broyles pick, at least to me. Still some decent guys out there too in these final rounds. I think Broyles has the potential to be a great talent and have no qualms with that aspect.

not a chance in hell....you trade the pick , exactly like the Rams did this year.

and if the Lions are in position for a QB to be BPA in 2013....Stafford will be in a wheelchair.
