OFFICIAL: Draft Day (Day One-Three)

Broyles would have been gone by round three based on his healing and pro day. They took him where they had to without burning picks to move up like last year. Benson can start on multiple specials while competing for the nickel slot. That's what you get in round three.

when the R2 and R3 picks are labelled as "good later round picks", one has a right to question the selections made by the lions IMO.

could have gotten a better talent at CB in R2 and still gotten Broyles in R3. Heck, probably could have gotten Konz in R2, Broyles in R3 and then Bentley in R4 based on all of the analysis from the "experts" indicating both those picks were taken at least one round earlier than projected.

isn't that the definition of reaching? i don't care what the lions board looks like for BPA...they needed to consider more strongly the view other teams have of these guys to realize they could have gotten them later.

as for going with a 4th WR, i'm guessing they plan to run 4 WR / 1 TE or 5 WR sets frequently considering their RB situation. plus he can replace logan and stovall bumps down to #5 WR which is not unreasonable for him, especially since he is a solid ST guy.

like others have said, no issue with the players they have, just the slot in which they got picked.

There were a ton of things that happened that the "experts" were way off about. No way to know if Broyles would be there in the 3rd and if they really wanted him its not like they jumped up to get em. Mayock even said when Broyles was drafted that he "won a dinner" because he went in the second and not the third.

I'm not necessarily saying that it would have been my pick because it wouldn't. I'm just saying they definitely see something there. Lets try to figure that out before we go thrashing the pick.

You like the Broyles pick cheeno and by like I mean is that what you wanted round two?

no. he's one of those fans that defend everything that the team does. he's probably one of the guys that called me out when i said fairley was a terrible pick last april. Look what happened. an injury, out of shape, looked kinda meeehhh, and then gets busted with weed in the offseason.

Definitely not, I was in stunned silence like everyone else. I was on the Konz train myself who coincidentally went next. What I liked was thinking back to watching OK games and seeing Broyles as uncover able and imagining him in our offense. 6 100 yard games 2 150 and 1 200 in 8 games last season.

Yes. Mayhew's a genius. Now let's hold hands and dance around the mulberry bush singing kumbaya.

In case you didn't know I'm being sarcastic.

sorry cheeno. taking my frustration out on the wrong person.

In all honesty though, I'm not that guy. You re thinking of Zoom. I like Broyles talent wise, would it have been better picking someone else and trading back into the second for him? Maybe.

cheeno's legit....but yes there are some people who don't seem to like us challenging the "authority."

People who won't let you question Broyles remind them of Derrick Williams. Mayhew's not infallible.

Nothing to do about infallible but we've all wanted guys that ended up sucking and we've all wanted to pass on guys that ended up good. I'm sure we all had a wtf look when a WR was taken in the 2nd but I want to see him play before deciding. And who knows, he might be the next Jerry Rice for all we know.

And why is anyone surprised Mayhew takes his best available? He's been doing it since he got here. I'm chilling and looking forward to tomorrow..

No doubt, Mitch...but my issue has nothing to do with Broyles talent. I think he's good and could potentially be great. It's not, in my humble opinion, where we needed to go in that round. Give me LaMichael James there with the uncertainty of Best and Leshoure or Trumaine Johnson. Not a talent issue with me. I don't see Broyles as a bust, but I do think we had/have more pressing needs...

Above all I'm a Lions fan and want Broyles to succeed now more than ever and I'm behind him all the way, but it's just not where I thought we should have gone in round two.

If he catches 5 TD's this year, I'll be happier than a pig in shit.

Honestly though... when they called the pick I went "KOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH SHIT WHO DA F..?"

That's what BPA means, its void of need or so I hear..I'm just wondering if he starts as our 4th wideout or if Nate is out the door?

i understand BPA, BUT how long can you wait to fill your needs? It'd be a different story if our secondary was at least respectable, but they aren't. You can't dismiss a guy who is probably only a few spots below BPA if he's a need pick.

Maybe next year, TE will be BPA when we pick. ignore our needs again because of the ridiculous BPA.

I don't think you do, lol. Sorry, I'm just tired but need is not part of BPA. As Schwartz says all the time, when you go after need, you sometimes reach and then the next year you might have to reach for the same need. So he goes talent over need. Whether you like it or not, its the way they operate. We all saw it last season when we selected a DT at 13, the year after we took Suh and traded for Williams.

I'm sure some or all of you have read this but the following excites me:

What he brings: Broyles is quicker than fast working from the slot as a wide receiver. However, his best attributes are his hands and his toughness working the middle of the field. Assuming he recovers his full strength from his injury, Broyles could end up bringing great return at this point.

How he fits: At first, this doesn't look like a big need for the Lions as they have an interesting group of players. However, Broyles gives them a chance to upgrade at the slot receiver position. In this offense, they run a lot of short to intermediate routes that are fairly low-risk. Broyles is a guy who knows how to get open and work zones. If he can be that slot guy, he can really open up things outside for Calvin Johnson. He gives Matthew Stafford a consistent target.
