OT: Tigers Playing Like Mad Men

The Tigers right now are on 10 game winning streak and have only lost one game since the beginning of Sept. Are the other teams just rolling over or are the Tigers just playing out of their skulls?

Hopefully they can keep it up. It's starting to look like the collapses in 2006 and 2009 will not repeat themselves.

Yes, the Tigers are going to get to the post season, and...

What collapse in 2006? I keep seeing people referring to that...

The Tigers didn't collapse in 2006. The Tigers clinched a playoff berth in 2006, and went on to win the American League Championship, and went on to the World Series.

Saying that a World Series representative collapsed at the end of the regular season is beyond absurd.

They backed their way into the playoffs and gave up the division lead, having to settle for the wild card. From that perspective it absolutely was a collapse. Thankfully their postseason performance erased most of that from our collective memories.

BTW, do we really need this thread when there's a whole forum dedicated to the topic? It's not that hard to click over and read the other forum...

Go ahead and post entirely about the Tigers there if you want to, and feel free to go ahead and choose not to post on OT Tiger threads here if you feel that's appropriate; I post there, I just responded to a post in this forum on a thread that somebody else had started and...

...since you responded here...erased "most" from collective memories? When Mags hit the pennant winning home run nothing else regarding the AL Season mattered...actually, when the Tigers clinched a spot in the post season, nothing else during the regular season mattered to me...

But hold onto whatever inconsequential grieviances you want to...and keep responding here, if you want, even though there's an entire forum devoted to the Tigers...it's a free country...

Yikes, sorry I won't post any Tigers stuff here. I know there is whole other forum dedicated to Tigers baseball. I will stay on topic from now on.

I wish more people would post different things here like this. The ol' Michigan board had all kinds of stuff on it. I am not a fan of a bunch of different forums. The Michigan board has always been a place to intelligently discuss Michigan sports, other sports, and a multitude of other subjects.

as for the Tigers, I think they all started doing performance enhancers 3 weeks ago. I think the plan was to do them the last 6 weeks to prevent the usual collapse

ANd

No! They didn't collapse in '06. A team that goes to the world series cannot be said to collapse. Yes, they failed to win the division, but that lined up the Yankees in perfect position to be bitchslapped. WHo knows? If they had won the division, they might have gotten knocked out in the first round...

Now, THAT...

That is fucking hilarious.

No need to apologize, and my bad if I came across as a jerk, didn't mean to. I just wondering why this was posted here as a OT post with the Tigers board right there, but I guess this way you can hear directly from the Michigan board regulars instead of jumping right into the other board, which has it's own set of posters. If you never really posted there while on ESPN, I can see the reluctance to hop over and just start posting. That said, I hope this mindset will wane and we'll get more "cross-pollination" between the different boards, if you will.

Anyway, I exalted you Newton, for your diplomatic response, so you have what appears to be your very first karma point.

I think you're not really acknowledging just how poorly the Tigers finished the 2006 Season. On August 7th, they were 40 games above .500 at 76-36. Over the remaining 50 games the Tigers went 19-31, and basically were fortunate they had built such a lead that they could ride it out into the playoffs. We all remember the dramatic moments fondly as well, but let's be honest with ourselves and not deny the facts. I don't think it's stretching the definition too much to call that a "collapse." Granted, it didn't matter for shit in the long wrong, since we took care of business and had home field for the World Series despite it... and then lost anyhow.

But each year is new, Boston is pulling a good imitation of us from that year right now; they've been on quite a slide now. I'm hopeful for the playoffs though and feel like with our lineup, we'll always have a chance, even if Porcello or Penny are getting blown up in the 1st the rest of the way till we clinch it. Verlander, Fister, Sherzer for the playoffs... not bad.

Like "Mad Men"? What? You mean they're wearing 50s/60s throwbacks...drinking and smoking on the job...that sort of thing?

Not trying to be a smartass, but you have noticed there are forums for other topics on this very board, no?

With Miggy and Jimmy, are you surprised?

Yeah, I remember the season. I really didn't ever have much worry that the Tigers would miss making the playoffs, and they didn't. They clinched the Wild Card with 8 games to go, then lost every regular season game after that - or something like that.

It was surprising that they didn't win the division title with the lead they had at the time they clinched a playoff berth, but what the hell, they were in the post season regardless.

Nobody expected anybody to beat the Yankees that year, whether that team had won the Central Division championship or not - but the Tigers did!

Then the Tigers swept the As (who had eliminated the Central Division champs) and won the AL Pennant - a slightly older and more distinguished tite then Central Division Champion - in fact, if a team wins League Championship, the Division Championship means squat (the Twins fans could have celebrated their team's Division Championship while watching the Tigers go onto the World Series, if they had wanted to).

A collapse would have been missing the playoffs altogether, like happened in 2009.

I'm baffled when any Tiger fan expresses any disappointment about 2006 except for losing the World Series - it was the best Tiger season in a long damn time.

The 2007 Rockies went on that incredible tear to make the playoffs, swept the D'bags and Phils and then had to wait almost two weeks for the faggot Red Sox to come back against the Tribe and it killed them.

I love how the Tigers are playing but I fear just a bit of that "too much, too soon.". Hopefully Leyland can bring some experience

Maybe right after the Tigers clinch the Central Division Championship they can go ahead and lose all the rest of their regular season games, to set themselves up to turn it around again as soon as the post season gets underway.

Of course, but I don't really consider that "this very board." I consider those totally different boards, or forums, if you will. This is the Michigan board. I consider those different boards on this website, just like you had different boards on the ESPN website. Maybe its all one board with different forums. I guess it doesn't matter what word you use. I like to click on this link and see a wide variety of topics discussed by the posters that I am familiar with. I go over to the other forum and I am not familiar with any of those people. Maybe I should expand my horizons and get to know them.

No, I didn't consider you a smart ass, just ignorant of my perspective.

I do see a lot of people who post on the Michigan board on the Tiger board...Monster, Mitch, I post there, dannydiggler, biggunsbob, DeathRoh posts there sometimes as I remember, the fabled and legendary ScottChicoHall posts there (he has a couple different handles there, but I'm sure you won't be surprised when I tell you it doesn't take long to know that it's him)....to name a few.
