call me heartless....but this is not a tragedy. A tragedy is a plane crashing with 300 + people on board. 300 people willingly boarding a plane that they know is going to fly over a warzone....Is dumb....and the plane exploding is probably closer to what my expectation for the fate of that plane would be than safely landing at its destination. For me this is closer to how I feel when the guy that puts his head in the crocodiles mouth gets his head ripped off. I kinda shrug...and nod...and say yup....that's what I thought would happen.

So all of the passengers knew what the 777's flight plan was prior to boarding the jet?

My analogy would be that they were like the doomed occupants of the upper floors of the Twin Towers on the early morning hours of 9/11. A "captive" audience, as it were .

I'm all for freedom of speech, but I despise these people. I hate them more than any ultra conservative out there. It's beyond annoying, insensitive, and breeds mistrust. Some of these recent stories have hundreds of thousands or millions of views.

Supposedly the FAA had instructed American carriers not to fly over Ukraine. That's good. more cash strapped airlines didn't care or we're willing to risk the flight in order to save on jet fuel. I don't think they will be taking that risk again...

I agree, that's a lot to expect of people. It's not obvious where a plane is going to go. If you look at a map instead of a globe, your guess probably won't even be close.

My understanding is that most - if not all - people on board were probably killed instantly by the missile shrapnel, if not the explosive decompression of the fuselage rupturing. Uh... So there's that.

I was reading another article on this, and in the comments, someone linked to an article from October 2001 (the date is why it wasn't bigger news here in the USA) about Ukraine accidentally shooting down an Israeli airliner over the Black Sea. It said most of the crew and many of the passengers were killed instantly as the SAM was designed to shower it's target with shrapnel

The average air temp @ 30K feet is -35 F. If any passengers survived thr missile hit and were blown clear after the explosion and rupture of the jet's fuselage, they likely were unconcious at best and died during the plunge to Earth & before reaching the ground.

Yep. at 30,000 ft. they would have been starving for oxygen in the thinner atmosphere, causing them to breath harder, forcing extremely cold air into their lungs. Probably not a peaceful or quick death at all for those not near the warhead detonation. Though hopefully many were rendered unconscious by the pressure wave, and didn't experience suffocation on the fall.

especially since shootdowns have happened quite a few times, and Ukraine accidentally did this in 2001:

Knowing missiles can miss their targets, or accidentally target another plane nearby... how can you take the risk of flying over a warzone?
