God love'em, I respect the man immensely, but I am convinced he is no longer really coaching that team. His interview after the game was pretty telling. His age has finally caught up and that's too bad. It sucks we gotta get old. They were saying during the game today, that he doesn't even visit from the press box during halftime. A couple of us were talking about this last year about who really is the coach. I don't think we came up with a definitive answer.

A lot of head coaches delegate things to their assistants. He's still the head coach of that team.

That's his title, that's not necessarily what he is. I've watched six of their 9 games. He's a figure head and that is all.

He hasn't been a head coach since 2007. He's just a figure head. He has nothing to do with what the team does on the field. I wish a reporter would ask him, "Joe, could you name your starting offense?" He would guess maybe 4 of them.

We have no idea what he does during the week. Hoke doesn't wear a headset. How involved is he?

His contract is up at the end of the year. He's now passed E. Robinson, so he's got the last record he was really chasing.

PSU will have a new coach next season.

Hungry, the dude is 80+ years old. I have a damn good idea what he does during the week. Nothing. We know what Hoke does, we've seen the pictures of him talking to kids on the sideline, putting on the headset from time to time to see what's going on. He's involved in every sense of the word, he just trusts his coordinators. Paterno doesn't know what's going on. He's a spectator now.

They could ask him "Joe, do you know where you are right now?" and he probably wouldn't have a clue. Listen to anytime the man talks now, he's gone man. It's a crying ass shame but he has almost nothing to do with that program besides lending his name to it.

And I'm fairly confident I had this exact same post 2-3 years ago on the ESPN board. So its just basically being reinforced right now.

Jeez is he ever far gone. They interviewed him tonight and he almost forgot Eddie Robinson's name. I thought he was going to call him Jackie and start talking about the Dodgers and what a great thing he did for baseball. Yes.....I am joking, but his words were almost a drunken slur tonight. He has no idea who the quarterback is and he has no idea that they even switch the quarterbacks during the game. The headset means nothing. You can still be involved, like Hoke is, without a headset. It really is sad, but it also means we're all getting older too. Fuck that sucks.

Drunken slur? Been like that for years.

I don't think you have any idea. They talked during the game how if Joe Pa wants them to run a certain play, he tells them to run it. At 80, you don't think he knows anything about football? Just because he can't participate in drills with them doesn't mean anything.

I don't think you have a clue what goes on with the Penn State football team.

Yeah, when he does those pep rallies, he sounds like he doesn't have a clue. Whatever.

Have some respect. The man has earned everything he's got. I believe he still knows a lot about football and coaches the amount that he wants to. You've never talked to him. You've never met him. You have nothing to do with the Penn State football program and neither do I. You think because you listen to a couple of interviews that you know the guy has lost his mind...ok. Have fun thinking that. I don't know why you would waste your time even thinking like that, but hey, its your time, so go ahead.

I think JoePa is great for the sport and I think he still knows a lot about football and he knows what's going on. I'm sure at 80, he has his moments, like we all will if we are lucky enough to make it that far.

No need to hate on JoePa.

Yep, especially when one just does not know.

"Man! I saw a brief clip of JoePa talking. He's lost his mind and is totally useless!!"

What the hell?

I don't think any of us have questioned what he's done there. The title of this thread is "Paterno is no longer a coach ANYMORE." Anymore being the key word. Everyone on this thread and board has heard how he talks, his mind is all but gone. That's what happens when you push his age, things start to deteriorate. The fact that he knows alot about the game means dick when he comes to being an active participant in what his team does and calls. He's a figure head. He's earned that position, fine, but right now, he's a sideline spectator.

But, that's my stance. I'm not going to waste all Sunday going back and forth on it. Agree to disagree.

Well, I think that a lot of people younger than him have appeared to lose their mind, like you. You're the same person that said that Beilein couldn't coach and he made you look like a fool. Well, I guess really you did that.

I still believe that JoePa does some coaching. That makes him a coach. I still believe he knows whats going on around him. Many foolish younger people think all old people have lost their minds. When JoePa tells one of his assistants what to do, they do it. Do you think that they go against him behind his back? Well, that makes him the boss.

I doubt that you're a psychologist. I doubt that you've had extensive discussions with JoePa. I doubt you have the knowledge to determine whether or not he's "lost it." The dude's been goofy for as long as I can remember going way back to the 80's. I don't think you know what you're talking about, as usual.

You are getting way too offended, you'd think he was your grandfather. This is a message board. We all talk about different things(football related) that are on our minds or things we have perceived to have seen. It's what we all do on here. It's funny that you always seem to have a bug up your ass when it comes to what I post. If you disagree, that's cool. State why and don't be such a dick, because others don't have your same view. If you had read my first post, you would have read of my respect for Paterno. Instead you attack in a "how dare you" kind of attitude. You are right on one thing, we all hope to get to that age some day and Paterno has done more for college football than anyone. But next year he needs to step aside and let one of the other coaches take over for real.

I don't think someone talking about the way he talks is showing disrespect. He does indeed slur.
