PF Johnathon Williams III looking to transfer to MSU

Johnathon Williams III is transferring from Missouri and has asked to have contact with Michigan State on his transfer application. We recruited him heavily. A week ago Williams told people he wants to transfer to MSU.

There's a chance he could play right away. The 6-9, 225 lb PF averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds last season as a sophomore. This kid is a dynamic player and a great athlete. His coach bolted so there's a good chance the NCAA will let him play next season.

This would be a huge get with Swanigan looking Cal bound. In fact, with Williams being a proven performer at this level, I'd take Williams over Swanigan in a heart beat.

wow next years team could be as deep as any I've seen under Izzo. Legitimately 10 players that can really play!

I saw the same thing and would love to have him, Izzo spent a lot of time with him in HS. On what grounds could he play right away? he's not from the area so I can't think of any family reasons, I'd be fine with him as a RS and then he could step in after Costello graduates

Yeah, I don't recall one's coach leaving ever being used as a reason for a player to be granted a waiver to transfer and play right away.

When a coach bolts a program, the NCAA occasionally accepts that as a hardship. The school already restricted where he could transfer to. Kid is an athletic and long stretch 4 who is left handed and can rebound well. Shot 35% from 3, but has a really nice touch around the basket. He's the perfect replacement for Dawson.

no doubt he would be a big help, I just see that release more commonly with an incoming freshman vs someone who's already played for 1yr. allowing that would decimate programs that lose their coach in general, they would not only lose their incoming recruits (most likely) but they would lose a big part of their team.

Would be nice, im going to put it in the back of my mind. It seems like all the "locks" flake out. The more I research the more it looks like Swanigan is going to pull a jamil wilson and play for a basketball program that has nothing to offer way across the country. I suppose if they are desperate and guarantee him playing time like he is the coach, he can go. Entitlement frauds like this have no business in a Spartan program.

If the rumor is true about Swanigan saying he wants to be guaranteed 30 minutes well be better off without him. His post offense is great but he'd be a big liability on defense. We don't need freshmen coming in with locked in playing time and not having to earn it.

I didnt feel as bad about him not commiting once I heard why. No top tier coach or program is going to cater to a players demands let alone an unproven Freshman. Hope he enjoys trying to scrape his way into the tourney with California.

Agree on that. He'd come in average about 10 ppg with spotty defense, then decide that is enough to go to The League.

if that's all true, not 100% confirmed. if he's truly demanding minutes then he doesn't belong here, if it's his adoptive father, that's a different story

I haven't heard Swanigan say anything about wanting guaranteed minutes so I'm not gonna rip him for that. These "inside sources" are rarely right.

Demand for minutes aside, Okafor has great post offense but is a liability on defense and dook just won the title. Obviously, Cal would need more than Swanigan and who knows if Rabb and Brown would also commit and they probably don't have a Quinn Cook on the roster but I doubt Swanigan is worried about that. Sounds like he just wants to showcase his offense for a year and isn't particularly concerned w/ making a championship run.

The demand for minutes is the problem and it's stupid of him. If he can score, he'd get the time without having to demand it - he'd be paired up with w/ costello or schilling and coached on the floor by valentine and nairn.
