DET-SD GRADES: ROUGH START FOR LIONS? STAFFORD-JOHNSON CONNECTION
Lions QB Matthew Stafford and WR Calvin Johnson connected only twice in Sunday's loss to the Chargers.

THOMAS MANEY

Detroit Lions

? Despite a fast start that resulted in an 18-point lead in the second quarter, the Lions couldn?t take advantage as the offense stalled in the second half. That was in part due to a lack of downfield passing; QB Matthew Stafford (-0.6) completed only three of his 10 passes thrown more than 1o yards downfield, and he especially struggled to connect with his top receiver, Calvin Johnson (0.9), who finished the game with only two receptions. Pressure was also a factor, as Stafford faced heat on 38.7 percent of his drop backs (only five QBs saw more frequent pressure on Sunday) with a -1.0 grade and 37.5 accuracy percentage on those plays.

? Defensively, the Lions limited the Chargers to 3.2 yards per carry on the ground, a good result considering the offseason departure of tackles Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. DT Haloti Ngata (0.0) was double-teamed often and proved difficult to move, while another offseason addition, DT Tyrunn Walker (+1.8), put forth an impressive display after two seasons of good production in limited snaps with the Saints. Walker logged a career-high 57 snaps, collected seven pressures, and frequently squeezed the pocket with effective bull rushes against Chargers? LG Orlando Franklin (-0.6) and C Chris Watt (-6.8).

? His fourth quarter fumble aside, rookie RB Ameer Abdullah (+0.4) provided a solid outing for the Lions (94 yards on just 11 touches). Check out 10:53 of the first quarter and 9:21 of the third quarter for his best plays. It will be interesting to see how the Lions continue to get him the ball going forward.

Top Performers:

LB Josh Bynes (+2.2)
DE Jason Jones (+1.8)
DT Tyrunn Walker (+1.8)
DE Phillip Hunt (+1.7)
RG Manuel Ramirez (+1.6)

San Diego Chargers

? QB Philip Rivers (+1.5) rallied the Chargers after a slow start, blitzing the Lions defense with screens and short passes. While his 92.7 accuracy percentage was the highest of any QB on Sunday (85.7 percent when pressured), 32 of his 41 attempts were thrown behind or within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage with his passes travelling less than 4 yards in the air, on average. It was nevertheless effective, as he frequently hit WR Keenan Allen (+1.7) (often on a shallow crossing route), who saw 11 more targets than any other player. The two combined for eight first downs and an average again of 9.8 yards.

? The game did not provide an encouraging start for the Chargers offensive line, which is coming off of a rough 2014 season. C Chris Watt (-6.8) and LG Orlando Franklin (-0.6) combined to allow more than 10 pressures. The only impressive member of the unit, RG D.J. Fluker (+2.2), was carted off of the field with an ankle injury.

? After an impressive?but injury-shortened?rookie season (+8.1 overall grade in 230 snaps), CB Jason Verrett (+2.5) showed no signs of slowing down after surrendering just one reception for 6 yards. Offseason acquisition CB Patrick Robinson (+1.7) also chipped in with an interception and forced fumble playing from the slot. Overall, it was a solid display from the San Diego secondary.

CB Jason Verrett (+2.5)
RG D.J. Fluker (+2.2)
WR Keenan Allen (+1.7)

QB Philip Rivers (+1.5)

Bynes did well but lacks the range. Levy back will help Tulloch. Tulloch and Mathis were terrible.

Lions have good DTs still. Walker was a beast

And like I said in the other thread, pressure on Stafford was the problem. 5th highest pressure in the league.

I've gotta get a subscription.

Numbers seem about right.....though I'm not sure how Bynes got a positive grade. Stafford was about neutral.....which seems dead on to me. He did not cost us that game.....it was an overall team effort.....including the coaching.

Do you have Ebron's grade? I saw him make a couple of good blocks as well as having a solid day catching the ball.....besides the drop. Seems like he should have been a +1 or so.

Bynes did well but lacks the range. Levy back will help Tulloch. Tulloch and Mathis were terrible.

Tulloch and Bynes both lack range. Quite the duo they are! This lb group isn't shit without Levy, I really hope KVN makes some monstrous strides at becoming the player we think he can be. It's time for a couple of these young guys to show progression out there

Here's my question. What the fuck happened to Whitehead? Why did Bynes and Travis Lewis get more snaps than him?

He seems to be in the doghouse, but I haven't heard a reason as to why??

Anyone know?

I don't get it either

Whitehead was Probable with an elbow injury going into the game, maybe that limited him?

Offense was awful. How can you possibly have that many weapons. ...cj triple covered....and still not be able to find an open receiver? We might have the worst qb in the history of the nfl. It's truly impossible to do what he did last week.

LOL.....looks like I'm going to have to block BOTH of LKP's accounts.

Stafford was pressured way too much. Worse pressure % than last year in this game.

3/11 under pressure with 2 ints. 16/19 without pressure.

Weddle, Verett and Flowers played really well. Verett can cover Tate one on one.

Stafford was 63% still and 8.2 YPA. And one int was not his fault. It was pressure.

Stafford did his job. Ebron drop, Tate short of sticks on 3rd and 10, 3rd and 3 Abdullah run short, pressure on both picks.

I just don't understand how they can't produce in the passing game when CJ is doubled & the other safety is deep. Underneath should be open on every play and Tate should be one on one every play. Either they are not running the correct plays or Matt just isn't making the reads.

So Matt pressured 11 times on 30 drop backs (36.7%)

According to you Rivers was pressured 17 times on 42 drop backs (40.5%)

If all of Rivers incomplete passes came under pressure he would have been 10/17 under pressure (58.8%) compared to 27% for Matt.

A good QB can still have success under pressure. Actually, that is the difference between a good QB and one that is just average!

Stafford was pressure 12 times. 11 plus sack.
Rivers 17

Stafford 9th most in league, Rivers 10th most Week 1. Good job by our Dline by the way. 3.2 YPC run D too, which is what we had last year. Good job Dline.

DTs had 1 hit and 12 hurries combined. 7 Walker, 4 Ngata and 1 hit and 1 hurry Cudjo. Suh 0 sacks, hits and hurries

The difference was Verett and their ILBs covered. Tulloch and Mathis did not. One fluke bad game does not define a season. And a game changer like Levy coming back is huge too

If it comes down to hurries or no hurries I'll take the hurries. But they need to hit the QB. And sack the QB.

I bet you would have a hard time finding a qb that COULDNT score 14 points vs a crappy san diego defense thru 3.8 quarters if they were triple teaming your primary WR. Even I could gameplan the shit out of that lol....Lombardi cant and Matt cant execute.

Weddle and theire ILBs did a good job. And Verett can cover Tate one on one. At least he did on Sunday

3/11 from pressure.
