Playoff Scenarios

I've read in a couple different place that the Giants and Cowboys still have a shot at the wildcard over us, but that makes no sense. From the way I see it they are out of the wildcard hunt and just have a shot at that division. Maybes theres a tie-breaker scenario where they make it over Atlanta, but not over us unless I'm missing something.

The best record they both can have is 9-7. In that case that means the Giants have swept the Cowboys so they would win the division and since we beat Dallas head to head even if we lost 2 straight we would hold the tie-breaker over them. If the Cowboys win out then the Best the Giants could be would be 8-8 and since we can finish no worse then 9-7 they wouldn't get in over us either.

So my question is why are they talking like they can make it in over us.

The only thing I can think of is if they both finish 9-7 and both Atlanta and Detroit lose the last two maybe Dallas would have tie-breaker over Atlanta and Atlanta has tie-breaker over us so somehow our tie-breaker against Dallas doesn't mean anything? Honestly I never ran into a scenario like that before, but nothing else makes sense unless the NFL is wrong on its playoff scenarios above which wouldn't make sense either. Maybe someone who knows a little more could esplain it better.

Grandy has the whole scenario in a post made in the playoff picture thread, here it is so you don't have to go look for it:

Lions lose against the Chargers and Packers

Chicago loses a game
Arizona loses a game and beats Seattle or vice versa

Giants win both games which one includes Dallas (thus the Giants win the East)

Dallas beats the Eagles and loses to the Giants

Atlanta loses both their games

This results in

Atlanta, Detroit, and Dallas all 9-7

A 3-way tie between teams who aren't in the same division results in a tiebreaker based on conference record


Dallas would be 7-5 and would get the 5th seed

And I believe the tiebreaking procedures revert to the two team tiebreaker for the remaining two
Atlanta would be 6-6
Detroit would be 6-6

And Atlanta would have the head to head advantage

However if this scenario plays out and Atlanta wins one of their games, the tie will be between Detroit and Dallas, in which Detroit would win because of the head to head advantage.

I just look at it this way. Lions win Saturday and were in.

Win against GB(Hope they are resting their starters) then we get the #5 seed and get to play the NFC east.(I dont see ATL beating NO)

We control our destiny.

Pretty much, I'd hate for it to be decided by conference records.

Must be nice being one of the two NFC West teams that gets to play teams twice in a crap division like the West as well as 4 mediocre (or worse) teams in the East.
