Porcello 5th start; Tuiasosopo makes club

Congrats to Matt!!

Hope that he will succeed in his role with the Tigers, just love to read stories like this where someone finally gets their big break after years of toiling in relative obscurity, regardless of their profession. So many never have or ever will.

Congrats to Matt T on making the club. What a great story. I hope he is effective in his role and sticks with the club all season. Leyland loves a guy that can come off the bench "run into one". Hopefully he doesn't flame out the way Boesch and Berry did

I saw Porcello getting the 5th spot, I didn't think Tuiasosopo would make the roster though, based on his career MiLB and MLB numbers I guessed he was just having a Raburn-esque spring training, and the powers that be would see that.

Guess that leaves Danny Worth with a bus ticket to Toledo.

Our powers that be see a player they like: raw power, few on base or defense skills.

Actually, he is above average at drawing walks.

He has spent time in the minors at all 4 infield positions and all 3 outfield positions. The only position he hasn't played is catcher.

His versatility, being a righthander and fairly young (26) is what got him on the team.

Tuiasosopo is just going to be a role player on an expectedly contending team that is comprised of many "star" players, who are being counted on to carry the ballclub all season long to the eventual playoffs. If Matt can just fill in on the field when needed, w/o making many defensive miscues, he can hit say, ~.250 or better, with a dinger or an xbh once in a while, along with coaxing a BB here and there, and although he lacks the wheels that Kobernus had, maybe even steal a few bases, then he should be more than adequate.

If he was to be relied on or required to do much more, then the Tigers would be in deep trouble. Don't know yet if he can lay down a proper/decent bunt, (has only 14 in the minors & just 1 in the majors career) but there aren't that many who can on the team anyway. When was the last time that the Tigers had a player who was even above average @ doing so over his career?

Edit: BBR's player page has Matt playing his "final" MLB game on Sept. 28, 2010, vs the Rangers so they will soon have to remove/delete it: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=tuiasma01&t=f&year=

I wouldn't consider the weather above the Mason-Dixon line, to be very conducive to playing MLB as yet or especially over the past two weeks. A nasty winter storm just passed south of MI, dumping over a foot of snow in some areas of Illinois/Indiana. If the regular season was to begin in mid-March, then the schedule-makers would need to ensure that as many games as possible would need to be played in the South, Southwest, Far West, and Northwest US until April at least. Even the first half of April, if not the entire month, can result in many game postponements b/c of cold, wet, and/or snowy weather.

then start spring training later and shorten it. Also, I know that they won't shorten the season so I think they need to have more double headers. Maybe let the teams expand their rosters on the days that they have them. Cold early spring baseball and November playoffs suck!

2012 - April 5th and October 3rd (182 days)

2011 - March 31st and September 28 (182 days)

2006 - April 3rd and October 1st (182 days)

1984 - April 3rd and September 30th (181 days)

1972 - April 15th and October 4th (173 days)

1968 - April 10th and September 29th (173 days)

1961 - April 11th and October 1st (174 days)

1960 - April 19th and October 2nd (167 days)

1961 was the beginning of 162-game schedules. Prior to that, it was 154-games.

Average Detroit High Temperatures

April 1st = 51 degrees

April 11th = 56 degrees

April 21st = 60 degrees

October 16th = 60 degrees

October 26th = 56 degrees

November 8th = 51 degrees

Game 5 last year in Detroit was on 28 October. Game time temperature was 44 degrees (8:00 PM).

Game 2 in 2006 in Detroit was on 22 October (Game 5 was on 27 October). Game time temperature was 44 degrees (8:26 PM)

Game 5 in 1984 in Detroit was on 16 October. High in DET that day was 71 degrees.

Game 5 in 1968 in Detroit was on 7 October. High in DET that day was 60 degrees.

No surprise at Porcello, he earned it, but even if he hadn't, you don;t showcase your trade bait from the BP. Puts us in a nice spot with a 6th starter in the BP. WOuld love to see Porcello finally put it all together, he's shown he has the ability to be better than a 5th starter.

Smyly's First 6 Starts
5 QS 34.0 IP 27 H 6 ER 10 BB 34 SO 1.59 ERA 1.09 WHIP
5.67 IP/GS
5 of 6 games going 6 Innings

Last 12 starts
2 QS 51.3 IP 57 H 34 ER 15 BB 45 SO 5.96 ERA 1.40 WHIP
4.28 IP/GS
4 of 12 games going 6 innings

Porcello's peripheral stats over the last 3-4 years have shown him to be SLIGHTLY below average (meaning #3). People see Smyly's 2012 as him deserving it over Porcello. I maintain, that after his first 6 starts, Smyly "bombed".

Nice work !!!!! stats for everything!!!!... Face it we are not a cold weather team...Damn it all to hell that is the reason we have played so badly in the WS...

Bad and bad. Porcello goes from decent to bad from year 1 to year 3 to trying to trade him, I think somewhere along the line Smyly was named the 5th starter, to now starting? Because of ST?

ST, IMO, is only good for two things: 1.) Get vets ready for the season and 2.) See how the youngsters do;

I don't have much love for Smyly either but you're all kidding yourself if you think Porcello will be better than he was last year. Should have traded him for something and then Smyly at 5 wouldn't seem as bad.

Better hope he pitches better or we won't get jack for him.

I'm all for more double headers but not those stupid day night double headers. Lets get back to the good old days, game 1 at 5:30, 20 minutes between games, game 2 roughly at 9:00. You can adjust it.

Never happen because its all about the money.
