Porcello and Castellanos/Garcia for Ellsbury and Lester

Could someone fill me in why the Tigers would pass on a deal like that? Financially it could get iffy as together Ellsbury and Lester make 15.6 million, but both are underpaid at those levels. Ellsbury has been a great defender in the corner spots and is a great smallball hitter and baserunner. Lester had some bad luck with BABIP last year, but has been a 4-5 win player before then. We would have one hell of a starting rotation and outfield production with a trade like this.

I can understand being stingy about letting go of our top prospects, but aren't those two guys pretty significant additions?

I'm all for high payrolls but at times you need to go cheap. Adding 24m the next two years for Lester might be overkill. Ellsbury would be a nice addition but would he play right? He's a damn good CF. And as far as prospects go, and what I think of Castellanos, a big chance Nick will fail.

First, Ellsbury is arbitration eligible. He made $8.05 MIL in 2012 and might just make more in 2013. Lester will make $11.63 MIL in 2013 and $13 MIL in 2014 if the option is picked up. So, for 2013, their combined salary will be $20 Mil or better.

Second.....health is an extreme issue for both. I pointed out in another thread I wouldn't mind having Lester. I don't want anything to do with Ellsbury, especially as a one year rental. And I wouldn't sign him to an extension due to health concerns

Porcello isn't a FA until 2015. Garcia is 2019. Castellanos is at least 2020.

If Lester gets back to normal BABIP and is a 4-5 win players, 24 over two years is a steal. I can understand that we aren't the Dodgers or Yankees, but a deal is a deal. Ellsbury would play right, sure. His defense in center has actually been rather pedestrian because of his weak arm. He's been much better in the corners defensively.

Personally I'd like to trade Porcello + and get youth back. Someone under control for awhile. Like a Fister (youth and untapped talent)?

I don't disagree at all. I was only responding to the initial proposal. If someone is willing to give up youth and talent at a different position, I'm all for it. But if someone offered a significant upgrade with the only downside being limited years (Ellsbury) and age (Lester is only 29), I'd take that too. We are built to win right now. I'd rather be all in than waiting years for certain prospects to develop, at which point our stars could be on the decline.

We'd also not use Lester as a SP in the playoffs, and if I'm giving up Castellanos I'd want it to be somebody who will help more than as a RP in the playoffs.

Ellsbury would be a one year player, so not gonna wanna give up either Porcello or Castellanos for him.
