Porcello trade scenarios?

So if he's the second best pitcher on a lot of teams (best on a handful of teams) that still means he's a number 4? He can only be a number 2 in a good rotation to be a number 2? That doesn't make sense.

Not everyone has a 1 a 2 a 3 and so forth. That's the way I look at it.

And no one says, Cleveland should trade for him and give him 15m per year because he's a number 2.

Send him to SEA for Brad Miller and Tom Wilhelmsen. Git R Done~!

I don't see Upton coming to DET to platoon with Dirks, because we aren't shopping Dirks, which tells me DD and Smokes want him to play vs. right handed pitching.

Kevin, was it you who previously mentioned SS/2B Nick Franklin from the mariners?

Could have..

The Mariners have a few middle infield prospects that are not on their 40-man roster. Which means, if we trade for on of them, we do not have to add them to our 40-man roster.

This is why trading for Stanton can be problematic. If we trade 4-5 players off of our 40-man roster, the Marlins would have to create openings on their 40-man roster. This is no likely to happen.

Now...the Marlins could include 1-2 lesser talented players occupying their 40-man roster as part of the deal, but then DET would have to add them or release them (designate for assignment).

I am all for a lesser known, but just as valuable prospect being the target of a DET trade.

Tigers prefer to act soon in resolving Rick Porcello saga.

Tigers rumors: Rick Porcello asking price set.
mlbdailydish

Tigers want shortstop, outfielder or late-inning reliever in exchange for Porcello.

Late inning reliever?

Like a "stud" closer?

OFer?

To platoon with Dirks?

Boesch may then need to go buh-bye via trade, unless the Tigers were to somehow figure out a way to retain him on the 25-man roster, perhaps by not taking Quintin Berry along when they break camp? Even if so, Brennan could be a total morose dud again, as soon as in ST, which might necessitate his being DFAed/released outright.

SS?

Whoever they might obtain in exchange for Rick alone would most likely not be marginally, much less significantly better than Peralta, which would result in Santiago probably being on the trading or chopping block. Ramon can play SS and 2B, the Tigers really need to obtain a SS who also can play multiple positions ala Don Freaking Kelly, as it wouldn't hurt if he could play some 3B as well, with Danny Worth probably being designated as Miggy's backup...hopefully the player that they might acquire in trade would perform much better on O and/or especially D than either or better still both of their IF backups could/would.

This really seems like a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation, b/c the Tigers just don't have that much SP depth, including the minors as it is, since they traded one of their blue chip SP prospects in Jacob Turner for Sanchez last season, and trading Rick just makes it that much shallower, in the event of an injury or injuries to their staff, not to mention the potential for sub-par performance(s) by one or more RPs who will comprise their BP.

Dbacks source Nick Piecoro made it sound like it was very unlikely that his team would acquire Rick Porcello.

Yeah, well as we have seen in the past with the Tigers, sometimes what seems like a nearly impossible/improbable trade scenario, might still happen when more time passes and especially if some other moves are being made that directly or indirectly affect one or both ballclubs, and/or involvement by other ballclubs occur, then trade discussions can potentially redevelop.

Wonder what it would take to get Nick Franklin and Tom Wilhelmsen from the M's. Not really sure about Franklin fielding ability but he's pretty young right? Wilhelmsen has been solid for a couple years now. I think his numbers against lefties aren't bad for a right hand pitcher either.

Looking at the players mentioned, the mariners have some players that could/would help the Tigers needs,
The Miller kid has some good numbers up to AA, Franklin iirc, is also good defensively, Wilhelmsen would certainly help the bullpen late innings, I wonder if Porcello, Boesch if they were interested and maybe Green from the Tigers minors or another minor leaguer or two would get it done.

Not to act like it would be a huge win but maybe we could get a guy like Casper wells back as well. good low cost defensive outfielder on the bench.

Dave Dombrowski: Rick Porcello has 'leg up' on Drew Smyly for Detroit Tigers' fifth rotation spot.
from Mlive

why do I get the feeling DD is talking out of both sides of his mouth on this. Maybe they didn't get the offers they were looking for out of trading RP, so now they say he is leading for the 5th spot?

Didn't he just say a few weeks ago that Smyly was part of the rotation?

We going 6 starters?

"And Porcello is a fine big-league pitcher. I mean, last year, I know he was down a little bit when you look at it, but ... you're looking at a guy who's 24 years of age that has won 45 games at the big-league level."

"It wasn't his best year last year, but you're also looking at a guy that's won 14 games a couple times at the big-league level and is only 24 years of age,"

Sounds like a salesman to me!

This is an effort to build his value and hedge against a non-trade situation. If there is one thing I think DD excels at, it's hyping players to certain teams and getting decent trades done. Hopefully that is what happens here.
