Odds are there is an insurance policy on him by the Rangers. Or, had he stayed with DET, the same. So really the salary won't be an issue if he is retiring for medical reasons.

Only if they took a separate insurance policy out, which I doubt.

Fielder is of course still under contract through 2020 and has almost $100 million left on his contract (with the Tigers still paying $6 million per). It remains to be seen whether Fielder is simply retiring and walking away from all that money, whether the Rangers will release him and pay him what he's owed, or whether a settlement between team and player will be reached that allows the Rangers to get out from under the full financial obligation.

-- Though the Rangers have an insurance policy on Fielder that pays 50 percent of his salary in the event of a long-term injury, they will not recoup any money in 2016. There is a 90-day deductible period before they can file a claim, and there are not 90 days left in the season.
-- Because of the deductible, the Rangers recouped just a little more than $2 million of the $24 million owed to Fielder in 2014.
-- Fielder is under contract until the 2021 season, so the Rangers are on the hook to pay him for at least the next four seasons. But if he has surgery, there are questions about how he would respond to a second neck surgery, the potential limitations in flexibility it might cause and how he would respond now that he's two years older than the first.

It will probably be no different than what happened with Albert Belle. CLE kept him on the 40-man roster (60-day DL) just to recoup some money from the insurance contract. If they release him, they cannot collect.

Fielder kept his spirits up despite the sadness of retiring, and was even able to deftly fend off one of the stupidest questions ever, with a reporter asking Fielder, "Do you understand what Lou Gehrig was going through in his famous speech?"

Were I the boss of that reporter, he/she would be unemployed today. EDIT: Unless, in his statement, Fielder said, "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."
