Watch this off-season as the Tigers might reacquire the FA Pudge Rodriguez for one season and 1.something-something million to be backup catcher to Avila in '12.

:)

Hey..it could happen, yanno?

DD has said that VMart will bat exclusively as the Tigers' DH next season in order to help to prevent him from becoming injured, I thought that Victor might make it through at least half of his 4 year contract as DH/backup C for the team, but apparently not.

I think that the Tigers should have Inge split time by platooning @3B and C, with Avila and whoever the Tigers pair him with @3rd, but we all know how NOT much Inge likes putting on catching gear.

Neither do I, BUT Brandon is under contract for one more season. Might as well milk it and save a roster spot, as there aren't very many players available in MLB who can backup starting catchers, as well as play an IF position other than @ 1B.

It isn't like the Tigers won't eat a player's remaining contract..ie Sheffield and Robertson, while they perform for another team, but Inge is a much more touchy issue, esp. since he has reached the 10-5 trade veto with the team.

But there is no 10-5 releases his ass veto.

Bad PR move if they would do so, not to mention all of the thousands of Inge POTG-texting ~180lb 5' 4" soccer-mom slappies, many would likely flash-mob plot-twitter together and gang up and attack DD in his box/suite @ CoPa, after overpowering security.

Oh, ha...reached blue-stars Mr. Sandman status with this post!!

PR move? You're kidding, right? No one would get in an uproar. Its Inge, not Verlander.

Depends on his replacement, if Benchamitt, yes, if obtaining a studly vet 3B prior to ST, then far less-so.

Still, there is little doubt that the soccer-moms' queen, being Mrs. Kringe herself would have that smile wiped off of her mug, if the Tigers' brass were to dare to round-file/shit-can her Brandon prematurely and permanently..

we have already seen the Pudge show....I see no reason to bring him back

Whom do you (or anyone else who reads this thread) see the Tigers acquiring to backup Avila then?

Hello? Bueller?? Bueller???

It is quite obviously not a slam-dunk, sure-thing that Avila will replicate or improve upon his offensive stats next season. I hope that whoever they get won't be a Rabelo-type or worse yet, a Treanor-like disaster, still wonder how that guy slipped through the Tigers' medical-clearance cracks and managed to hide the fact that he was still injured before he was signed by the team.

My OP was done tongue planted firmly in cheek, but the Tigers WILL need to obtain a backup to Alex next season, nonetheless.

I'd take Pudge back as a backup. It'd have to be understood he was a backup and nothing more though.

Looking at the catchers, for a year, maybe barajas or hernandez?

Honestly, Rod Barajas. If they do get him, I hope he grows the stache back.

Yeah, both of those two have about a decade or so of seasons behind the plate, with Ramon Hernandez having the most mileage @ ~1500 games vs Rod Barajas with ~1000 GP, but the former having better overall stats offensively, dunno who is better NOW on defense though, looks like a wash, from what I read, 31% career averages for gunning down base-stealers, and with Barajas' slight career edge of committing 45 errors total vs 99 for Hernandez.

Take a look at what Pudge did last year. He was terrible. Why not just keep Santos or bring back Sardinah if you want a terrible catcher?

I will take someone like a future hall of fame in pudge over future nothing in Santos. For a 1 start a week thing why not.

I'm not advocating either.

Pudge hit .218 with a .281 on base. What about that is intriguing? Everything about his game has slipped. He's old and bad. Why not get Johnny Bench, he was even better than Pudge?

So he's not a starter but 1 game a week over Santos one game a week, who I know won't do much. Just a thought. Have someone better in mind tell me.

Pudge is familiar with some of the team, ballpark and coaching/manager, and has caught for Verlander and Zumaya (BIG IF he returns). Playing in what might very well be his final season in MLB AND esp. for a contender AND a team that he is "comfortable" with might provide him with the necessary motivation to perform @ a higher level, anything we can get outta him over a career minor-leaguer would be a plus.

Why are you just stuck on Pudge or a career minor leaguer? Why not get a decent back up catcher like some already mentioned.

That's what was brought up, " Take a look at what Pudge did last year. He was terrible. Why not just keep Santos or bring back Sardinah if you want a terrible catcher?"

Which is why I discussed this point.
