From Red wings Bleacher report

I don?t know what just happened.

I?ll start this by saying that I sincerely hope that people will point to this article years down the road as an example of a writer being 100%, completely, wrong. Totally ass-backwards.

Because that?s how I feel about Steve Yzerman?s first pick for the Detroit Red Wings.

Before I continue, here?s a quick thought experiment. If Ken Holland was still the GM when we went completely off the board to take a defensemen projected to be a top 4 defenseman ahead of players projected to be top line centers or wingers, how would you feel? Because I think that people would be camped outside his house.

I would be too, if it?s not obvious at this point.

It?s not that Moritz Seider is a BAD player. It?s that taking him at 6th overall, ahead of the players still on the board, is a huge mistake in terms of opportunity cost.

Sure, maybe the Detroit brain trust are the smartest people in the room. Maybe they just snagged Detroit?s next top defenseman out from under everybody.

When was the last time that a team went this far off the board this high and had it be the right decision?

No, I?m serious. I really need to hear good news.

Because we drafted a potential middle pair defenseman when there were numerous players with ceilings of top line forward still on the board. The highest Seider was ranked was #10, according to MidlandWingsFan74?s prospect consensus article.

If we had traded back to 10 and then taken Seider, I?d honestly still be upset considering the players who would have still been available. But, I?d be less upset. If we really wanted him, we could have packaged a few picks together to trade up to take him from the other side.

I admire a lot of people in hockey twitter, but I imagine it?s no surprise that Prashanth is near the top of the list. I wanted to link this tweet because it?s pretty much exactly what I?m thinking.

Alright serious thoughts. It?s not that Seider can?t become an excellent player - it?s just that he was likely to be available at 16. There were other guys available who at this time are more likely to become solid NHL players, including those at his position

Like I said above, I hope that this article ends up being a laughingstock a few years down the road. And if it doesn?t, I hope that we do a lot better tomorrow.

Speaking of that, here are some players who are still available for us to potentially pick at 35 overall.

I asked Dylan Galloway from Future Considerations, and he had players in the list above.

I?m going to add Albin Grewe and Artemi Knyazev.

Talking to Will from the draft site Scouching, here are his top ten left at this point:

Kaliyev, Brink, Hoglander, Robertson, Grewe, Lavoie, Fagemo, Rees, Knyazev, Dorofeyev, Fensore

If Holland had taking this kid he would be roasted.

He wouldn't have took him he would have taken a forward while the team continues to blow on the defensive side. Trading back seems reasonable but you have to get a trading partner. Not so easy. Polish says he was the 5th best d-man. I'm not so sure.. After the guy who went 3 it's all a crap shoot at that point. I'm sick of a shitty D. It reminds me of the Tigers where they always seemed to go pitching for years.

Its always a crapshoot regardless of where you are picking.

Keep in mind that Dylan McIlrath went 2 picks ahead of Cam Fowler.

But since I can't sleep might as well look at some of the D from past drafts.

I hope the pick works out. The kid is 6?4 so that is something.

Sounds like a really good kid. Can't help but not root for him. I love the bow tie.

Im actually pretty happy that they addressed the position and got a heavy right handed shot from the blue line. I honestly haven't read much negative of him. He is a great skater for his size, stays calm under pressure in his zone, sees the game beyond his experience level. So for me it feels like he fit a serious need better than anyone else available.

Holland took Broberg at 8 and no one is mad about it. I've seen him ranked as high as 10(like Seider) and as low as mid 20's.... Yes trading back would have been nice, but who is to say Kenny wouldn't have snagged him there instead had we done so? Haven't heard too much of an uproar over that pick compared to ours. I leave you all with a nice twitter thread of some decent highlights of Seider's...

From what I understand he tried to trade back but no takers and obviously he didn't want to miss the chance to get him.

No doubt. Maybe there was a better forward we could have drafted at 6 but sometimes you need to draft based on needs.

Wings had him ranked higher than the mocks. Y's not looking for the best players. He's "looking for the right ones."
