Red Wings Agree To Four Year Deal With Gustav Nyquist

I'm very interested to see how much money he got. The most comparable RFA production-wise last year is Brandon Saad (52 points), who ended up with a 6M per year deal. Saad is three years younger though, so there might be more expectation of greater growth in his game. Nazem Kadri and Mikkel Boedker, both about the same age as Nyquist, received 4.1 and 3.75 million a year, both having produced 50+ point seasons in 13-14. Boedker was on 50 pt pace but missed almost half the season. Kadri just wasn't as effective last year, but plays for the Leafs who need to overpay to keep players on their crappy team.

Nyquist makes sense around those same deals as Kadri and Boedker, so I'd love to see how the negotiations played out.

Update: 4 years, 19 million (3.75 million per year). Same as Boedker, less than Kadri. As good a deal as could be expected from such a young productive player.

He needs to start showing up in the playoffs.
Pretty small sample size, even for his career. Given the team didn't get out of the first round the only two years Nyquist has had real NHL experience, it's pretty early to start worrying about how he plays there. I'd much rather pay a player for his performance in an 82 game season than for his performance in a postseason less than a quarter of that length. That's how you get contracts like Johan Franzen.

Playoff production is important, but statistically speaking it evens out over time. Gustav doesn't just take games off in the playoffs, so there's no reason to suspect his game won't eventually work there.
