Red Wings roster

Last season the wings had a 30+ goal scorer was 2008-09. We have had two with 29
Franzen, and Tatar . Nyquist with 28. But that is a long drought. We need some goal scoring !!!

That Franzen over Hossa decision continues to haunt the Wings. That was the beginning of their slide downwards from Cup contention in my opinion.

Forwards weren't the issue, problem stems with the back.

#1 Retirement of Brian Rafalski in 2011.
#2 Retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom in 2012.

How do you replace two legends like Rafalski and Lidstrom on the backend?

White, Colaiacovo, Quincey, DeKeyser

White signed in the offseason Rafalski retired. He put up good offensive numbers playing with Lidstrom. When Lidstrom retired he was left exposed.

Colaiacovo, unfortunately, was always hurt.

Quincey was acquired at the trade deadline following Rafalski's departure. At that time he was one of the top offensive D-man in the western conference. FOr one reason or another he didn't pan out as an offensive d-man in Detroit. By the end of his tenture he evolved into a shutdown D-man because Detroit was so bad defensively following Lidstrom's retirement and the frequency of his defensive partners getting caught up into the play. Had not problems with Quincey apart from his contract which paid him as a great scoring D-man.

DeKeyser, still has tons to improve. At least he is solid defensively. However, he will never match the puck moving skill of either Rafalski or Lidstrom.

If you look at the years Detroit won the cups, it was their best defensive seasons not their best offensive years. The D-core has been decimated and last years addition of Green is great, but he's not the player he used to be and it is not enough. The D requires further bolstering.

Should I mention Green signed only 3 years after Lidstrom retired? Any wonder why barely squeking into playoffs and a 1st round exit has been on the cards the past few years?

Point of clarity, retirement of Rafalski was kinda of a shocker. Finding a replacement can be somewhat excusable as being caught offguard. However, retirement of Lidstrom? This was written on the walls for years. Holland was obviously without a plan.

Scoring has been steadily decreasing. You don't necessarily need a guy who scores 30+ goals, what is required are a bunch of guys who can put up 20+ goals.

Last season Detroit had only 2;
Larkin
Tatar

Its not a coincidence Zetterberg's offensive and +/-s tanked playing with Abdelkader. Yes he is getting up there in age, but playing Abbie 18+ minutes a game is an overall hinderance to the team.

I agree our defense needs to be addressed soon. I wonder if young guys like Russo or others will ever get a shot with the parent club? Man Holland sure did whiff ..

I'm not dismissing the notion that the blue line needs the most help at the moment. We can certainly agree on that. I was just pointing out that the Franzen over Hossa decision can really be seen as the starting point of the Wings slide into mediocrity. Hossa has gone onto win 3 cups with the Hawks, and Franzen doesn't even play and has been a huuuuge waste of money. Now the injuries part of it sucks, but it's the reality of the situation.

And I would argue that the Wings did need another pure goal scorer on their roster. Datsyuk and Zetterberg were at their best when they are setting guys up (a lot of times it was to each other). They are not pure goal scorers themselves. Hossa flourished in his brief time here, and when we are in these defensive slugfests with Boston or Tampa in the playoffs it would be nice to have a guy who can actually pop one in the net without having to get a lucky deflection or something.

So they definitely need blue line help first and foremost, but I believe they need another elite scorer as well if they truly want to get back to being contendors. They haven't been able to land one since Hossa left.

Special Teams have also hurt the Wings badly in their playoff series recently. The PP was abysmal last season. I think they went 1-25 against Tampa in their series and didn't score on two 5-3 advantages.

Mantha scored in the grand rapids opener and Callahan score 2 in a 3-1 win over the wolves. Coreau sold in goal as he stopped 28 of 29 shots.
