To a 1 yr deal for 3.5 mil.

I wish we had him about 5-6 years ago. Now I think he may be to old.

I Alfie still makes good sense. He's definitely not the star he was, but he is still relatively. He gives 100% every time he's on the ice and will be a good influence on our young guys as well. I'm just glad we got him on a one year deal instead of bidding extra years.

I guess there is a 2 mil bonus on top of the 3.5. But yeah he can still put the puck in the net. And we do need veteran leadership

Great signings by the Wings. With Alfreddson you get a hungry veteran, willing to give it all for a Cup. Sure he may be older, but he still has solid enough skills to put in 10+ goals, if not 20. Being a Captain, he has the leadership and can help mentor the kids that are coming up.

Weiss is a high round pick that played on one of the worst teams in the league. He never really lived up to his high pick status, but he is a solid second line center. A better version of Fil, solid on FOs, and a more dependable scorer, as long as he can stay healthy.

Pav/Hank/Gator
Mule/Weiss/Alfredsson
Tatar/Helm/Nyquist
Miller/Anderson/Eaves

Can't bag on the Alfredsson deal. There is no such thing as a bad one year contract.

However what was he thinking on Weiss. First, the Wings didn't need a center as badly as they made out. Next, they paid almost as much for Weiss as Philly just did for Lecavalier. Weiss is way under a point a game player. Albeit, that's in Florida and he didn't have a lot of help, so maybe his production will improve with some decent partnerships, but that still seems way in excess of his market value. Why give a 30 year old five years as well? Unless that guy is Dats or Z there is no reason to give that many years.

That contract to Weiss might be ok for a few years but we will probably hate it by the last two years.

In defense of Holland, some of these deals being handed out to marginal players is ridiculous. The power forwards like Clarkson, Horton and the like have been absolutely absurd. So part of this is a ridiculous market, but if the market is absurd sometimes the best thing to do is to sit out.

Honestly, Weiss is really not all that superior to Filppula. If Val gets a 4 year 3.5 mil deal for instance the Wings will feel pretty stupid for not waiting to see how the market played out.

Further, the rumor is the Wings are still interested in Cleary which is crazy to me. They have a log jam at forward as it is right now. If they sign Cleary that basically relegates Tatar to the minors, both Brunner and Cleary and Tatar and Nyquist are both in the minors again. That is pointless, both those players need to be playing.

I think above everything else the Wings need some cheap power. As far as I can tell Penner is still on the market. They would be wise to kick some tires on him and try and get some size.

Seeing Val sign for 5 million a year and 5 years makes the Weiss signing look pretty good. For arguments sake, Weiss is one year older, but has a much stronger individual resume. Val had one year at 66 points, with every other year being 40 or less. Weiss has had two 60-point seasons with only his rookie year having fewer than 42. White has consistently produced more offense on a less talented team than Val.

Signing Weiss for LESS than Val is arguably a steal.
