Religion in politics

It's hard to reason with adults that believe in fairy tales. They'll always believe their religion is special enough to supersede the rights of others.

I agree with you. And Killing in the name of any religion is just flat out wrong and should be condemned . Man all those wars ..

But I just don't know sometimes and think on it alot. (About a higher power ) Because driving to my son's accident I was totally freaked out about the whole thing and I admit I screamed to the darn sky crying my eyes out and such.

I believe there may be a higher power. I just think organized religion is awful and I have no interest in it.

which wars in the last 250 years were fought in the name of religion?

I'm not great with history, but I googled the #1 war on the list and I think it's a stretch to characterize it that way.

Me neither and I had never heard of the number 1 on that list that I can remember.Maybe it shouldn't be.

Hack does have a point though . More people have died in wars not based on religion I should have worded it better. Maybe I should have used atrocities or past wars . We would be kidding ourself to think that modern policies are not rooted in the realigious beliefs of the county or group envolloved. But I concede the point that more people have died in wars not based on religion.

When it comes to religion and wars, I think it's tough to specify to what degree any given war is driven by the religion or the religion is just a tool used by whoever happens to be in power. No true Scotman applies of course. But to the degree an organized religion becomes powerful, that power can be corrupted. It doesn't mean organized religion is any more or less dangerous that any other type of organization. You could make the same arguments about governments if you were an anarchist. How many wars have been caused by governments? Of course I'm no anarchist and I think that line of thinking is a mistake. Same deal applies to religion. I don't think you can make a fair blanket statement either way.

Lebanese war 1975-1990.
First Sudan war 1955 to 1983 ( probably not listed as such compare to 2nd)
Second Sudan war 1983-2005
The Croatian War 1991-95,and Bosnian war 1992-1995.
Nigerian civil war 1967-70

10 biggest

So none of the big ones and none of them Christians fighting in the name of Christianity.

It's also a bit of a stretch to call the Croatian and Bosnian wars religious wars. They were wars of independence which happened to be split along sectarian lines and while there was some genocide or ethnic cleansing, I don't recall either side being motivated by God or a particular religion to kill members of another religion.

Other than the drug addicted and totally whacko Joseph Kony, I'm not aware of a war carried out in the name of Christianity since the Crusades. Even the war on terror isn't a religious war for one side.

Good for them. It's definitely much better PR to just have isolated atrocities rather than all out wars, maybe they learned their lesson from the Crusades.

It also helps that all countries that have declared Christianity it's official (or state) religion aren't in a position to go war mongering.

Unless and until there is a Church of the United States and/or all other churches are proscribed, this is a herring redder than the tape at the Justice Department.
