Remembering the Bird

I remember being @ a bar one summer night back during Fidrych's one (and what really became the only) glorious season for the Tigers in '76. I was just 20 years old, but that was during the very brief 4 or 5 year period 1973?-1977? when the legal age to drink was rolled back to 18 in Michigan. So I was one of the very lucky few ~my age group that were ever able to legally imbibe from age 18 through 21.

Anyway, my friends and I were watching a Tigers game on the bar's TV while either shooting pool or playing foosball games, both were only a quarter (which was very popular as well as air hockey back in the 70s) The Tigers were losing and it wasn't a game that Mark was SP, so soon one of my friends yelled out "Dammit, give me The Bird"!!!

So I yelled back at him "Okay, here ya go!!", and raised my hand and flipped him off. Everyone around me then burst out laughing.

I remember when he pitched his first game me and my buddy were saying "who is this fk'n guy". Great season.

I only remember him posing with Big Bird...that is about it!

I love baseball but it was so much better in the 70's. Pure joy.

I remember it, too...a complete game two hitter, as I recall; the Tigers won 2-1, I think. It was a Saturday day game.

Don?t know why my paper route is coming into my memory of the event; maybe because I had to deliver the A2 news while the game was still going on (I remember seeing at least part of it on TV).

Saw This game from the center field upper deck bleachers. He only K'd one hitter all night. Game time 1:48!
