Rumor - Tigers Looking To Trade For Closer

Did you even read the article all the way through.

"Do the Tigers NEED him? Of course not ? in my opinion at least. But? that?s because, in my opinion, the Tigers don?t need to add a closer. If the Tigers are dead set on adding a closer, I?d much rather have them sign this guy than trade Porcello or top prospects to get a guy who put up better numbers in 2012 but probably won?t in 2013."

He isn't saying that it is a good idea. He is saying that if the Tigers are still after a closer, that he would rather they sign Rodriguez than to trade for a closer.

My take will be if you can sign K-Rod for a minimal amount of money, I would be OK. But, I don't believe signing K-Rod improves the team any more than maybe 1-2 wins, if that.

By that logic, you dont NEED Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera to win a WS, but would they help? Hell yea. Same story with k-rod but not to the same extent.

Plus I would rather add 1-2 wins instead of potentially losing 3 due to a horrendous bullpen.

He's had a very good career outside 2012 so I think KRod would be a nice addition.

meh. k-rod has control issues similar to rondon and others we have (BB/9 rate of close to 4 for his career) and has attitude issues on top of that. while id agree he would be a better option than trading for a closer, i dont really want to do either. i think we will be just fine with the internal options we have.

That's pretty much what I mean. I'd prefer him over one we had to trade Porcello for.

Indeed. This would be my reaction if we traded Porcello for a closer:

Rondon has bullpen session, Leyland talks more on closer
As promised, closer candidate Bruce Rondon and pitching coach Jeff Jones spent a good chunk of Wednesday morning’s batting practice in the bullpen, working on his delivery. They worked a little on his release point, and they worked some on getting his legs involved in his delivery again. Asked how it went, Jeff Jones made it clear the key wasn’t what he saw, but how Rondon felt about it.

“He felt good about what he was doing,” Jones said.

Whether that makes a difference won’t be known until Friday, when he’s scheduled to make his next game appearance against the Mets at Joker Marchant Stadium. Manager Jim Leyland called it “a little adjustment,” but said he didn’t know how much of a difference it might be.

“I think the best way to put it is I think this kid is potentially a fantastic closing prospect,” Leyland said. “Is he ready for that? I can’t answer that. I don’t want to shed any negative light on the Rondon situation, because there is none to be shed. I think this kid has all the equipment. The question is going to become, I think, at some point: Is he ready? Plain and simple. And if he’s not ready, the Detroit Tigers will absolutely be fine. I have total confidence in the guys we’ve got. We’ve got plenty of equipment out there. We may maneuver it a little bit different. It’ll be a second-guesser’s haven and all that. But that’s OK. In our profession, we’re used to that. That just goes with the territory.”

Leyland tried to downplay some of the sense of panic about their closing situation, saying he’ll be comfortable with whatever they end up doing with their bullpen. But he reiterated it would be easier to have a set closer than a bullpen by committee.

At this point, though, he isn’t sure how it’s going to end up.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do. I don’t know,” Leyland said. “But we’ll have somebody. And who knows, it might be Bruce Rondon.”

Leyland also revised his remarks a bit on Rick Porcello as a potential closer.

“I don’t think it’s a far-out idea,” Leyland said. “I just think it’s highly unlikely.”

Hopefully this isnt just a smokescreen and they really are content with what we've got.

?He felt good about what he was doing,? Jones said.

Well, as long as he felt good :hehe:

I posted that Beck info last night and agreed with it. tweak his mechanics, legs, arm slot, what ever and see how he does. thinking it made sense. Pitchers can lose something that was work 100% before, and then takes a little time to get back to getting it right... spring training is the place to do it obviously.

Tigers pleased with Bruce Rondon's side session.

“He threw the ball well,” Jones said. “We made a couple of little adjustments. He’s been a little too upright in his delivery, and it causes his arm angle to come up a little bit.

“We’re trying to get him to use his legs a little more and get a little bit more turn with his body.”

Jones said Rondon threw 25 pitches today and used all of his pitches (fastball, slider, change-up).
“He threw the ball well, and I think he felt really good about what he did,” Jones said.

Nowhere did I say we didn't need Verlander or Cabrera.

We are going to win, with or without K-Rod. The difference might be 1-2 wins different than if we had Mo Rivera in his prime.

The difference of having Verlander or Cabrera over league average is about 5-8 wins a piece.

You are overvaluing a closer if you think they generate anything more than 1-2 wins over average. You don't trade for closer and you do not sign one to a lot of money.

Capps and Franklin/Miller would be OK, if you didn't want either player with the Tigers this year. There is no way I would want anything to do with Pryor and his walks/control.

I just googled it, read the article and passed it along. He seemed spot on regarding Porcello and the Tigers infield woes.

The spread in Porcello's stats is not as wide as the differentails in the Tigers' defense.
