Lions' Jim Schwartz shoulders blameUpdated: December 18, 2012, 12:20 PM ETAssociated Press Recommend151Tweet160Comments1KEmailPrintALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz admitted Monday that his team's season has "gone off the rails" and the progress made during last year's run to the playoffs has become a distant memory.

Schwartz, who has lost at least 10 games in three of his four seasons as Lions coach, said the blame for the team's unfulfilled 2012 expectations rests entirely with him.

"The ultimate responsibility of the team is (with) the head coach, and I need to do a better job," he said. "4-10 isn't good enough."

Detroit's 38-10 loss at Arizona on Sunday was its sixth straight and the team's most lopsided defeat since a 48-3 loss at Baltimore in 2009. It also bucked the trend: After defeating Jacksonville on Nov. 4, Detroit lost its next five games by an average of 5.2 points, only to get hammered by the Cardinals.

Tight end Tony Scheffler said the Lions had chances to overcome four turnovers and beat an Arizona team that was riding a nine-game winless skid.

"We never thought we were out of it," Scheffler said following the loss Sunday. "We just didn't make the plays to get back in it. Our defense fought hard the whole game. We didn't give them good field position. They kept us in it."

Schwartz's assessment of the loss differed sharply. After defending his team's play in recent weeks, Schwartz said the Lions simply made too many errors Sunday to be competitive.

"We've had a lot of games this year that came down to one critical play in the fourth quarter that you look at and say, 'Hey, if we made that one we would have won the game,'" he said. "We can't be naive to think that this was one of those games."

The Cardinals intercepted quarterback Matthew Stafford three times, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Stafford told teammates Sunday that he believed he was responsible for the loss after a 24-for-50 passing performance that was easily his worst effort of the season.

"That is about as bad as I can play," he said. "For us to be successful, I have to play a whole lot better than that. I understand that."

Schwartz praised Stafford's decision to take responsibility for the loss, saying "that's what good quarterbacks do," but he also reiterated his opinion that responsibility for the team's performance ultimately rests with the coaching staff. He also said he never considered pulling Stafford.

Calvin Johnson's play was Detroit's lone bright spot Sunday. Johnson made 10 catches for 121 yards despite facing coverage that Schwartz likened to a box-and-one defense in basketball.

"(Arizona) doubled Calvin (Johnson) on just about every play," he said." They used punt coverage to try to handle him and the fact that he still had 121 yards says a lot about Calvin, says a lot about (offensive coordinator) Scott Linehan's ability to still be able to get him the ball. But we severely lacked other playmakers on the field."

Johnson's 121 receiving yards Sunday give him 1,667 yards for the season, putting him 181 yards from breaking the NFL single-season record Jerry Rice set with San Francisco in 1995.

The Lions host playoff-bound Atlanta on Saturday.

Hmm...it's one thing to fall on your sword and take responsibility for your teams' failures, it is a completely different thing to DO something about it. He'd better find some damn answers, because Lions fans have had enough of this crap...

Also:

We didn't give them good field position. They kept us in it." Yeah...for example when you let a sure touchdown go right through your fat fucking hands? Dipshit...

Scheffler is really pissing me off this year. He had two huge drops on Sunday. The one wide open that would have been a huge gainer(instead we go 3 and out) and right before Staffords first pick 6, he dropped a sure first down on 2nd down to get in Cardinals territory. Scheffler catches those balls it's a completely different game, same with snapping it a second earlier on the Kris Durham TD pass.

It's so much that is wrong at the same time that it's hard to just outright try and point a finger at a single person/scheme/gameplan etc.. They're not gonna blow the whole thing up but I hope that they do get rid of some aspects of this abominable season (a coordinator maybe?).

My hope is that they
1. Are not complacent regarding bringing in free agents,
2. Limit draft gambles to guys that are at least healthy and without an injury history prior to getting drafted, and
3. Stop game planning like victims that are scared to lose games.

Hypothetical question:

Since Avril's game is predicated on speed (and not a factor verses the run), if Gunther were canned this upcoming year and they still kept a base 4-3 but ditched the wide 9, would Avril still be worth keeping for the price he'll want next season?

Wide 9 is Schwartz so canning gun shouldn't change things, but ya I think he has less value as a traditional 4-3 de.

I didn't know that. Did he run a wide 9 at Tennessee. Probably not but it needs to go. Maybe with Avril and KVB gone they'll change it up?

I think he did but didn't he have Kearse and a KVB more in his prime. You need better DEs for the wide 9 to work. Inconsistent Avril and way over the hill KVB don't cut it. And Jackson and Young regressed. They didn't upgrade them because going into this year, there was no need to upgrade them with Avril, Jackson and Young coming off good years. KVB was just trying to hold on but he made more plays in 2011 of course.

Better DE play would be key, but really the blame goes to the safeties. They are responsible for the gap that is created, when we have a S that knows what they are doing (Delmas) and can take a decent angle you can see the difference. For how important the S position is when running the W9 it's infuriating that we have nothing but Delmas after 4 drafts. We need a S early top 3 then another late for depth and special teams play.

Very true. Durant and Tulloch have made more errors too and not shed as many blocks. Those errors were erased by Delmas last year and Spievey early last year. This year there was nobody to erase them. Especially on Lynch's and Peterson sweep. Plus the bogus Forsett run. And the 49ers Oline manhandled the Lions twice giving Gore big days both years.

Wells 31 yard TD, Durant getting blocked and Tulloch peaked inside instead of going outside and then Carey took a bad angle and the result was a long run and TD allowed. I don't think Delmas was on the field for that play.

Since the Lions 5-0 start the Lions are 9-17. This team is getting worse not bettter.

I might be considered crazy but I still think Best is the X-factor here. Just as an example a lot of bad plays in the Cardinals game could have been turned positive if Best was a dump-off option in the flat, as he was so often in his first two seasons. Unfortunately it is looking like his chances of returning are next to nil. So what are the options? Drafting yet ANOTHER RB in the first round??

There is some truth to that. Best got us 7 extra points at Minnesota with a 60 yard screen play and 10 points vs the Bears last year. They averaged 27 PPG offensively last year and got 2 extra PPG from 7 defensive TDS. This year we have 0 defensive tds and had more redzone trouble despite better red zone running than last year. That one extra score clearly makes a difference when we lose so many games by one score.

The offense and defense were never on the same page this year. One would play well and the other side of the ball would suck or suck at the worst moments(4th Quarter).

were a finesse passing team. So we went out and got 2 big bruising running backs. Brilliant. Just another example of how ass backwards this franchise is. A passing option out of the backfield would be huge in this offense...especially since teams continue to bracket CJ. Pulling another LB out of the middle in order to cover a speed back would open up so many more passing lanes for the slot and TEs.

They needed a workhorse back as well. And Best did alot in OTAs. The Lions were still counting on him. Now they know for sure. We got screwed counting on him but it was still up in the air. Hindsight is 20/20 saying they should have gotten a speed back last off season. You didn't see the doctor reports, Best participated in OTAs, the Lions thought they had their speed back and got burned. They were suprised he couldn't recover and so was I after a full year. The offense wasn't totally inept either. Hit or miss(unfortnuately miss in some big division games) but they adjusted some with Calvin getting more yardage and Broyles did well, Burleson was his usual solid self but nothing great. Young was a huge disappointement after a solid rookie year. Going into this season nobody gave up on Young. Pettigrew was on pace for 700 yards too but everyone will just remember the key drops and fumbles. And everyone is going to remember the offense sucking in the last 4-5 games with WRs 2-4 and Pettigrew missing.

nowadays you need playmakers at the rb position. The only 2 memorable plays from a rb this year were 2 plays from Joquie Bell. Leshoure is consistently a 3.9 ypa guy and had done nothing in the pass game. The "bruiser" should be used maybe 10 touches a agme in our offense...instead the "bruiser" is featured in an offense that cant over power people along the line and wants to throw for 5000 yards per season. That....doesnt make sense and is not effective.

If I were the Lions I would pretty much make plans as if Best is never going to play again. Even if he does he will get another concussion and that will be his last play in the NFL. He really should retire.
