Wings are just 7-24 in shootouts since 2013...still trying to fiND all time shootout team totals since 2005....but that number above is putrid... I guess in practice they worked on it. Howard said last year they hardly ever worked on it ...wtf:/

I hate the Shootout. Play a 10-minute 4-on-4 and make it a tie if no team scores.

I also hate the shoutout. My solution would be 5 minutes of 4 on 4, then 5 minutes of 3 on 3. Would take about the same amount of time as the current format.

After that, if the game ends in a tie, so be it.

3-on-3 ? too much ice and I think that 80-percent of 4-on-4 games would yield a goal before 10 minutes.

That's the point. Let's see who gets gassed first. Lots of open ice to be creative. And way better for fans to watch than a shootout.

Only way 4 on 4 yields a goal ( at least to the 80% probability factor you use) is if a team gets whistled and has to go 4 on 3.

I don't think 3 on 3 is hockey. It's shinny. Let 4-on-4 go on for 10 minutes and you will see more wins. This year, 40 percent of all OT games have ended in a shootout. Maybe 80 percent is high, but 70 percent is not and I'm ok with 3 of 10 OT games ending in a tie. Also … no getting one point for a regulation tie. The OT winner gets two points.

10 minute OT for a regular season which has 82 games is just too much. If they played 25 games a year, fine. Also, hockey tends to have a TON of overtimes. I'd rather see either a tie after 5 minutes, or the 3 v 3. Even though it's gimmicky, it's still less gimmicky than the SO.

Well the NHL is looking into lengthening the OT session.

If they are going to do that, make it like 6 or 7 minutes. 10 minutes per is just too extended. I feel like the Wings play in an overtime game every 2nd night.

If they are going to add two minutes, just leave it at five. Or get rid of it.

I agree that if you have to use a gimmick to decide the game you might as well just leave it as a tie. I don't know where the powers that be got it into their heads that all games must have winner in the regular season. Even in the NFL, although rare, they'll just leave it as is after 15 minutes vs having the kickers line up and nail 50 yarders until the tie is broken or something (for that matter I'd be ok with a few ties again in college football even if it meant a more limited OT where they don't switch the playing format).

I like the 4v4 idea.
