Tigers name LHP Drew Smyly fifth starter. He will make his MLB debut on April 12 against the Rays.
Drew Smyly was just told by Tigers officials that he has won fifth starter job.
"I am speechless," Smyly said.

Duane Below, Smyly's final competitor for the fifth spot, was optioned to Triple-A Toledo this morning. So was reliever Brayan Villarreal.

Tigers don't need fifth starter immediately. Smyly was told he will make one start in minors before big-league debut.

final spots on Tigers staff went to pitchers who are "strike-throwers with good stuff and good deliveries" - Leyland.

He was my frontrunner when camp opened. Too bad he won't get to see Comerica Park (in uniform) on Opening Day.

I don't know much about Smyly but he can't be much worse than Brad Penny

There's nothing (so far) to indicate Drew will be as bad as Penny's 2011. If Dombrowski wanted someone like Penny's 2011 for our #5, he would have agreed to trade Brandon Inge for the Phillies Joe Blanton.

Thankfully Dave refused that (rumored) Phillies offer. There may have been a third player involved. I dunno!
Lastly, Smyly wont see around 30 starts. If successful, he will need periodical rests during the season. That's when we may see names like Oliver, Turner, Below.....etc.

Smyly will be a true Rookie, when he makes his first start. Can not remember when someone starting a season before, without any MLB experience. This is really a big move for the Tigers,IMO.
Anyway congrats needs to be said to Smyly for winning this spot on the 25 man roster, IMO he was the underdog, going into the spring games.
One now has to take a closer look at the other Tiger starter canidates and wonder about some of there futures now. Should Smyly take control of this spot are trades an option for some now? Really Oliver has to step up his game IMO now. Turner better get it going and Crosby better stay healthy and get going as well!

Leyland never has been afraid to go with talented kid pitchers (Verlander, Zumaya, Porcello) and wasn't going to be bashful with Smyly.
Smyly showed him -- in addition to 4 good pitches -- that he could handle pressure. We'll see how it goes in front of 35,000-plus at Copa.
Always looked as if whoever made the rotation would get an important start at Triple A before the call-up. Nice convenience for the Tigers.
Smyly still has to show he can pitch in the bigs 22 months out of college. Has talent, but he won because five others subtracted themselves

Luis Marte's maturity (25) looked as if it might be the bullpen difference over Villarreal, who has the radar-gun edge. Marte quite poised.

Final Tigers roster probably waits until tomorrow, maybe Tuesday. The Inge situation. Injuries. They'll need maximum time.
DL an option on Inge that could buy Tigers time. But that's kicking the can down the road. They're paying the freight no matter what.
Reality of the latest Inge melodrama: Just when it looked as if he was gone at the end of 2010, Dave D. signed him to a long, bad extension.

I was listening to Pat Caputo earlier on 97.1. He basically said Inge has only had 3 bad seasons and his stats speak for themselves. Meaning, Inge should definitely make the team over Worth and Santiago.

"Inge should definitely make the team over Worth and Santiago." You gotta be kidding, cough, cough, gag, cough I'm in a state of un beleave able.

Better yet who owns 97.1 ??????????!!!!!!!!!!

Pat said that? He is losing his mind. Pat is smarter than that. I can understand if he wants Inge to make the team but to say that is crazy. O.K., maybe Worth (still a stretch) but not Santaigo.

Worth has out played inge, plus he can play short, every other team has passed on cringe,
what is pat caputo smoking.

Good for Smyly, nice to see a young LH pitcher getting a shot. I know it doesn't mean we won't see Turner and Oliver but to win that spot in your first shot speaks to his competative nature.

I hope that he has some good outings.

Pat is about six years removed from being "The Book On Baseball".
3-4 times per year I send him corrective emails on "obvious" verbal blunders during one of his radio shows that discuss the Tigers.

Pat has spread himself out too thin since joining the radio business. Covering all the sports has made Pat a very generic outsider-analyst of the game.
