Every NFL Teams' Best Defender This Season

Detroit Lions: Darius Slay, CB, 87.7
Signature stat: 10 pass defenses (career high)

Slay engineered a remarkable turnaround after surrendering 123 yards and a touchdown to the Broncos in his worst performance of the season back in Week 3. Thereafter, only two corners earned a higher grade than Slay, and he only allowed 438 yards in the subsequent 13 games.

PFF's 2015-2016 NFL Quarterback Rankings

23. Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions, 69.8

Split the season in half, and you get two different stories. Second-half Stafford was one of the league?s best, but he ranked dead last among QBs for the first eight games of the year.

PFF's All-Pro Team

Wide receiver (outside): Antonio Brown, Steelers
Second team: DeAndre Hopkins, Texans

What a year for Brown, who picked up the highest grade we?ve ever awarded to a receiver with his work in the pass game, doing so despite a midseason lull when he was catching passes from Landry Jones. It will go down as one of those seasons that we at PFF were privileged to watch. Spare a thought for a guy like Hopkins, who was pretty special himself, but must settle for life on the second team.

Honorable mentions: Calvin Johnson (DET) and Odell Beckham Jr. (NYG)

Cornerback (outside): Patrick Peterson, Cardinals
Second team: Josh Norman, Panthers

It isn?t easy tracking the top receivers in this league. Or, at least, it shouldn?t be, but clearly Peterson didn?t get that memo, because he?s had no difficulty doing so. His consistent, shutdown play is something we don?t often witness.

Honorable mentions: Darius Slay (DET) and Jason Verrett (SD)

Cool. I have a Peterson Jersey, the only jersey of a player that didn't suck. Btw, anyone want a Delmas or LeShoure jersey let me know

As much of a waste as this season was, there were some bright spots. I liked the improvement I saw out of Slay, Ansah, Diggs, Riddick, Stafford under JBC's leadership, Taylor, and a couple other guys.

All that is warm and fuzzy... Bottom line is that this organization continues to fail year in, year out and people accept it. I wish more fans felt the way i do and stop going to games. It would send an important message to the organization and maybe, just maybe, get them moving into the right direction. Fans filling seats is comforting only the league and organization. People need to wake up.

Yeah, like I said if this team started 6-2 and went 1-7 to finish, we'd feel completely different about this team. Caldwell would have been fired yesterday. Instead, we get the "Oh, nice finish, things are looking up, etc..."

Perception is a crazy thing.

I think it's a mix breed like many fans of teams. Some are fed up and feel like you do (myself included), some are fed up but will be positive at the start of the next season and some just don't care anymore.

Its all about Trends/Trajectory in this league (well, with most things in life). A team who starts 6-2 and finishes 1-7 is clearly trending down, and while the record would be identical to a team like the lions who started 1-7 and finished 6-2, the 'value' and response is different. In a very basic sense, its like the stock market.

Stock A Starts the year at $5.00, dips down to $2.00 in July, then recovers to end the year at $4.50

Stock B Starts the year at $5.00, jumps up to $7.00 in July, then tanks to end the year at $4.50

Both stocks are at $4.50, but most investors would tell you that Stock A is 'more valuable' than Stock B, due to its upward trend.

Its the reason the Eagles fired Chip Kelly. Sure he won 10 games his first two seasons, they stunk this season, and went 3-5 the last 8 games. Eagles management predicted this downtrend would continue, and decided to jump ship.

I liken this season as a school yard kid kicked my ass but then I went home and beat my sister up.

The price of a stock is based on the perception of the buyer's and sellers. The Lion's "trending up" is a perception as well. However, savvy traders may know good reasons for the dip in stock A vs. the jump in stock B just like a savvy NFL fan knows the biggest reason for the Lion's good second 1/2 vs. the poor start...which is who they played.

Well this stock continues to under perform the market, time to trade the stock and get some bonds to replace it.

While I get your point, I disagree. I try to go to three or four home games a year( it's tough sometimes because I live in Kalamazoo). My boys are just now getting to the age where I'm starting to take them with me. We always have a blast! Yes, I want the Lions to win more and someday actually play in a Super Bowl, however, I will continue to go to games because they are fun to go to.

The memories of going to games, and taking my boys to games, are far better than the memories I would have of sitting home boycotting them because I don't like the way they're managed!

The difference between your stock market analogy and the NFL is that you don't have a giant waiting period in the stock market, it's constantly fluctuating.

I really doubt there is any type of connection between a strong finish and the next season. Same way I feel about the bowl games. There's no "momentum" carried into the offseason. So many things happen in the offseason, players get hurt, teams surprise that weren't suppose to and vice versa.

7-9 is 7-9, regardless of how you got there.

Do you have a '2nd round pick' policy when buying jerseys?

The silver lining to Calvin retiring will be the financial freedom to lock up Slay/Ansah long term ASAP.

the possible down side is if CJ is retiring because he is sick of playing for a losing organization...it may cause those guys to reconsider extending and waiting for FA. If it's for health reasons...it may cause them to re-think playing period (like in SF)

Spot on!

Going to games with friends and especially your kids is the best. That's why when Detroit does play here in Arizona I'm still going to go. Too many great memories since I first went with my Dad in the 70's.. Wouldn't take those back for nothing. Especially after he passed all those memories come back and bring me happiness. And a little sadness but it's all good.

I will take one if you take my David Sloan or Mike Furrey jersey (both were gifts...)

I thought Sloan was going to be a superstar and Furrey had 2006.

Sounds like a fair deal.. I might be getting the better end of the deal.

Slay and Ansah are great pieces. Throw Levy coming back on that list. So we have a great piece at every level. Little worried about the rest of the defense. Safety position will be a weakness sooner rather than later. Quin is aging and Quddus is a FA. Need a quality starter opposite slay. Taylor developed but could use an improvement or at the least a rotational guy to pair with him. DT position has ???s all over it with our top 2 DTs being FAs.

Stafford is what he is....but could be less than that if Calvin is gone.

New GM has a lot of shit to do lol.
