Stafford about to make Bank

You really think a decent defense isn't attainable if we pay Stafford?

Its a trend. Russel wilson gets paid....you cut the fat from your defense. Seattle has lost so many of their front 7.....their D is no where near where they were 2-3 years ago.

The draft is projected to be heavy on defensive picks for us as far as need goes. Quin needs to hit on those picks and get some value in FA.

Dline - Could use upgrades and depth at DE.
LB - Need 3 new ones
CB - Need a starter next to Slay
S - Need a starter next to Quin. Need to replace Quin in 1-2 years.

A'shawn, Ngata, Ansah, Slay...good job. Im fine with replacing the other 7 guys.

You need money or luck in the draft to do that.

While I agree with the overall point youre making - that making Stafford one of the highest paid players in the league will hurt Quinns ability to improve the D, I certainly don't think its impossible.

You mention Seattles D dropping off - and it reminded me of an article I read a few days ago on ESPN about how Seattle has been able to maintain an elite D for the last 5 years. While I wouldn't say its as 'dominate' as it was 3 years ago when they won the SB, its still damn good, even after they paid Wilson.

Also, its not like Stafford is on a (post lockout) rookie contract, where he is vastly outperforming his value. He has a cap hit of $22mil this season, which is only $2.5mil less than Lucks new contract pays him per year. Even if the Lions make Stafford the highest paid player in the league, the cap hit will be at most, $3 mil/yr more than his current deal. Thats a lot, but certainly not debilitating.

The last thing I can say is that everyone mentions how they wish we had a dominating D similar to the 2014 team. But its easy to forget that we had 40% of the salary cap tied up in 3 people...Suhs cap hit was $22mil, Calvins was $13mil, and Staffords $16mil. Sure Suh was a big part of that D being dominate, but the rest of the D was pretty damn good too, and they were able to assemble that group with pretty much pocket change.

So I think its possible to field a competitive D while still paying one guy insane money.

Lol. Seattle is best d. 14 ppg. You can pay a qb and build d. Especially with slay, Ansah, levy and quin on this team

I've said all along, as long as it doesn't interfere with extending Slay/Ansah (lol..fuck you Levy) then I hope Stafford makes bank.

Some random thoughts: Quinn came from the Pats where a certain Michigan alum signs team friendly contracts. Stafford has made $100 mil over his career, would he sacrifice a few mil to win? I guess that depends on his trust in Quinn to build a winning roster with whatever he gives up on his end.

Does Stafford's wife have a net worth of $360M?

I think expecting anyone to give up money is rediculous. Like Tom said.....Brady is in the position where is wife is worth $360M so giving up a few million to that guy is chump change.....especially with his endorsements.

Stafford has never seemed to be the overly greedy type and I'm sure will make a ton of money on this next deal no matter what. With the cap going up every year, there is no reason they can't build a good defense even with a new deal. Draft well.....pay a couple of key pieces (Ziggy and Slay) and take a flyer on some veteran FA's.

Good points. I don't blame anyone for talking as much as they can get. Stafford'sbeen well paid given the old cba, I would try to pitch to him where a few extra mil in cap space can go.

Not sure there is a huge reason to rush a contract. Still have him under contract through next season. With his historical up and down, let him at the very minimum finish the season.

You could even franchise him in 2018 if he plays well and you couldn't get a deal done.

Very true. The franchise tag would make sense.......if he's playing like a top 5 qb then paying him like one is not an issue.

Franchise is a huge number for 2018. 22 million cap hit in 2017. An extension could lower that 2017 number actually. Extending him is smartest move you could make with the proper guarantees

If it wasnt true you wouldnt have moron GMS like the Colts have comming out and saying he cant help Andrew Luck because of all the money he gave him. Youre not supposed to say those things....the fact a GM SAID that points to how true it is.

Yes seattles defense is still good. Yes, they had to get rid of several pieces to pay WIlson. No they arent as good as they were.

First of all - yes, the Colts GM is an absolute buffoon, and will most likely get fired because of those comments (and because hes terrible at his job). But there is a big difference between paying Andrew Luck $5.5mil/year and $25.5mil/year. That is A LOT of salary a team needs to shred in one year. The Lions at most will have a $7mil jump in Staffords avg. salary. which is still a lot of money, but is far more manageable than $20mil

The funny/ironic thing is, most teams in the league would love to have this problem (Paying a QB top dollars because hes playing at an elite level). I have been dying for great QB to play for Detroit my entire life, and now we finally have one (atleast the last 16 games), so I personally cant get too upset that we are going to pay him a fortune, as it beats the hell out of the alternative, which is letting him walk, and starting over at QB.

This is a prime example as to why I believe that having a good GM is integral if your franchise is going to do anything long term. Drafting/developing players and making smart FA signings is the only way to sustain excellence. You need to have a steady stream of players who are on entry level contracts, or else you will have a dramatic drop off in one area of the team once your key players demand pay raises. Mayhew was terrible at seeing the big picture, and its why the Lions D went from Elite in 2014, to below average in 2015. He failed to account for Suh and Fairley leaving, and passed up several great chances at finding a suitable (and cheaper) replacement. Quinn seems like he has big picture in mind, but its far too early to see what he is able to accomplish.

this is exactly right....its a travesty we were able to shed suh and calvins salary and have little to nothing to show for it. Aaron Donald anyone? To your point he knew we would be down those players the following year. No need to beat a dead horse with mayhew though. Hopefully Quin doesnt make those same mistakes.

Yes, im fine giving Stafford a raise...its where the market is going. Do i think he deserves to be the highest paid QB in the league....not a chance. But i agree to a point.....if you find a qb you know you want to keep as a starter you have to pay them.

Our drafts have been awful for going on 2 decades now....Just off the top of my head Slay might be the only 2nd rd pick still on the roster the last 10 years lol. Thats pathetic. Quin gets stafford, ansah, slay locked down, works out a few more minor kinks in the oline, then needs to do much better in the draft. This years draft was a good one for the future....hes on the right track if he continues to build like that moving forward.

Ebron, swanson and lawson are good from 2014 class. 2015 class could still be saved by laken, abdullah burton and diggs. And corey robinson showed some things but keeps getting hurt

Van noy and carter were disappointments. Injuries cost theie development though. Wright was a bad trade but lots of dts added this offseason. Walker and Ngata are mayhew guys. Thronton was sheldon white

Pay the man!!!

He's playing at an elite level. Pay him as such. Remember one thing....players don't exactly look at Detroit and tell their families and friends that they want to play here...lol. Maybe if we start winning more games then players will come....make the playoffs.....win a few playoff games.....get talked about as a Super Bowl contender and the rest falls into order. Until then...lock up your studs and build through the draft. Obviously try and land a superstar here or there, but this is football. It's not like baseball or hockey. Teams don't let stars walk out the door as much...it's rare in football. It happens but not much.
