Tampa Bay 5 Detroit 1 Final

Playing the cup holder what do you expect. This season was more like a placeholder before the true rebuild starts.

That was a easy goal. Just a joystick move controller. Our goalie hardly moved.

Yikes down 2-0. This rebuild may take till longer then we thought.

Which top 10's are thinking about? Zadina who was playing well but out with Covid, a top dman who just got hurt in Germany or the guy we just drafted? And Ras is being used wrong. Those are our recent top 10 picks.

I watched the 5:00 version and I can relate to being on the pickup-hockey team that was standing around, watching the other team move the puck and score.

I guess my point is that I can also:

1. Turnover the puck in the neutral zone with a lazy backhand pass 0:06
2. Two-foot it behind the play (Larkin) 1:11
3. React to where the puck was rather than where it’s going (Fabbri) and look like a metal table hockey player from the 1950s 1:14
4. For a lot less $$$ than these guys get

Meant it more as a generalization.

Take any year's top team prospect ranking. Look at the players 5-10 years after published and see how few of the super hyped players actually became something.

Or just look at the past Wing prospects. Sometimes it's on the players, sometimes its on the development (ie. team), or sometimes they never deserved the hype.

The Stanley Cup years were built on foreign players selected way down in the draft not at the top. The only top pick really was Yzerman.

They need to find magic with those late draft guys again.

The 97-98 teams were vastly Canadian. The Russian five notwithstanding. The 02-08 teams had many more ?foreign? players, and FAs.

The lowest round I found was Vladdy in R11. The other impact players were anywhere from R2 to R9.

The rounds were shorter then.

Quite right.

97/98
Starting Goalies
Vernon - Canadian
Osgood - Canadian

Top 4 D
Murphy - Canadian
Lidstrom - Swedish
Konstantinov - Soviet
Fetisov - Soviet

Top Forwards:
Fyodorov - Soviet
Yzerman - Canadian
Shanahan - Canadian
Larionov - Soviet
Kozlov - Soviet
McCarty - Canadian
Lapointe - Canadian

Then most of the depth was Canadian.

2002

Goalie:
Hasek - Czech

Top 4 D:
Lidstrom - Swedish
Chelios - USA
Fischer - Czech (he seemingly played a lot more than I remember)

I mean, the rest was a rotating hodge podge, don't even know who to include.
Duchesne was pretty sheltered.
Krupp doesn't really count.
Olousson (Sweden)? I guess he makes best case.

Top Forwards:
Fyodorov - Soviet
Yzerman - Canadian
Hull - USA/Canadian
Shanahan - Canadian
Robitaile - Canadian
Larionov - Soviet
Holmstrom - Sweden

Might be underestimating Holmstrom for 97/98.

Still mostly Canadian to round off the roster.

2008

Goalie:
Osgood - Canadian
Hasek - Czech

Top 4 D:
Lidstrom - Sweden
Rafalski - USA
Kronwall - Sweden
Stuart - Canadian

Top Forwards:
Datsyuk - Soviet
Zetterberg - Sweden
Holmstrom - Sweden
Franzen - Sweden
Cleary - Canadian
Filppula - Finnish
Samuelsson - Sweden

Depth was more of a mix.

The reason for the high number of Swedes in the 00s was due to combination of Jim Nill and Hakan Anderson.

Jim Nill tended to run the draft, especially after R1.
Hakan earned himself a great reputation for talent.

When Nill left for Dallas, it began a decline in Detroit leaning on Hakan and many of his picks were dealt away or not given a major chance. Taking skill guys and trying to turn them into a 4th line grinder is NOT what I consider a major chance.

Jarnkrok for example has been on Nahville's middle 6 for 6-7 years now. He was better then Legwand when he was traded for him.
Janmark went to Dallas for injury prone Cole. Surprise, Cole got hurt after arriving in Detroit. Not his fault, but damaged goods upon arriving. Janmark played middle 6 role for Dallas. Currenty filling in on Chicago's top 6 playing a ton with Kane due to their lack of depth.

The last few years of Holland in Detroit Tyler Wright was head of scouting and most his drafts were a massive bust. The 'go big' approach failed spectacularly.

In general, Detroit has been quite bad at developing players, especially Goalies and Defenseman.

Doug Houda/Blashill seem to have a touch of death when developing young D.
Wings haven't developed a goalie to the NHL (even backup) since Mrazek. The team playing a considerable part in breaking him too because Carolina took a chance on the reclamation project.

I see that the ‘89 draft selected Lidstrom (3/53) Fedorov (4/74) and Konstantinov (11/221).

There were dark horses ... Holmstrom ... 10th rounder in 1994. Daytsuk (6) in 1998. Zetterberg (7) in 1999. Ericsson (9) 2002.
