I see that the ?89 draft selected Lidstrom (3/53) Fedorov (4/74) and Konstantinov (11/221).
There were dark horses ... Holmstrom ... 10th rounder in 1994. Daytsuk (6) in 1998. Zetterberg (7) in 1999. Ericsson (9) 2002.
That draft was insane.
Got Sillinger, Boughner, Drake as well.
Unlikely to see another draft like it.
Pretty much all the Soviet players went much later then they would have. It was a massive gamble to even pick Soviet players at that time, up until about 88 it was considered a wasted pick.
It wasn't until 90s that drafting Soviet players could realistically impact your roster. Guys before them were outliers.
Wings would have drafted Bure as well had they known he was eligible for draft. He also went in 89 and Wings were mad pissed when Vancouver drafted him and provided info to league claiming he as eligible for draft.
